Not much happens in Rosendal and that is the way the locals and tourists like it. Cosy cafes line the streets and keen hikers grace the vast mountainside - for a relaxing few days away from the stress of the modern day – Rosendal is your place. Many who visit do so to experience the copious walking trails that dominate the landscape; scale the towering hillside and steep cliffs of Folgefonna National Park to witness the breathtaking views of Norway’s east coast. If you’re lucky you can catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights that are on display from around October to March – the perfect setting for couples looking for a romantic getaway. The hiking opportunities command the town’s reputation, yet there is more to Rosendal then steep mountains and jagged rock formations. Visit the Baroniet Rosendal to rejoice in the myriad of beautiful flowers decorating the garden, oftentimes there will be a concert taking place if the weather is agreeable. The Baroniet Rosendal is the main attraction in the town, but the church and art gallery are also worth visiting.
Walking is the most common choice of transport due to the idyllic surroundings and small size of the town, though in the summer it is possible to travel by horse and carriage from the harbour to add a little romance to your trip.
Hidden amid the labyrinth of islands that make up the south-western coast of Norway is the small mainland village of Flesland in the municipality of Bergen. Consisting of just a few quaint Norwegian-lodge style homes that freckle the spring-green fields of the countryside, Flesland is a peaceful haven that exists mere miles from Bergen’s bustling airport. The port in Flesland is nothing more than a tiny square pier that protrudes into the North Sea from the sheltered banks of a narrow bay. To the left and right of the bay is a marina of yachts that bob against the backdrop of a charming, tree-lined shore. It’s a view that can be most enjoyed from the picturesque fishing spot at at the far-end of the departure pier. There are no passenger amenities at the port save for a tiny terminal booth. Parking here is limited too. As such the port is more suited to travellers on foot or those being dropped off by car or taxi cab. There are no public transport links that lead in or out of Flesland either. The nearest bus station can be found at the airport where a short shuttle service takes passengers to and from the city centre of Bergen further north. Two fast-ferry routes, both operated by Rødne Fjord Cruises, leave the port multiple times throughout the week. One ship sails north to Bergen, a route that passes underneath the Sotra-Bru suspension bridge, while another travels south on the winding voyage to the town of Rosendal.
