Roatan Guide

Roatan is a small island resting in the Caribbean, laying around 65 kilometres off the north coast of Honduras. The port is used as the gateway to the Honduran mainland, with many 1 hour 20 minute crossings to La Ceiba on Honduras’ north coast.

What is there to do in Roatan?

The myriad of fascinating coral reefs create an underwater haven for scuba diving and snorkelling, allowing you to explore the exotic sea-life from the copious diving sites that line Roatan’s coast. Plunge into the depth of the waters among the alluring tropical fish or swim around the bright blue sea at your own leisure. For those not partial to underwater adventure, the shoreline is entirely encompassed by forestry and verdant foliage - the perfect setting to sit and admire the beautiful surroundings. It would take a few days to fully traverse around the mountainside, so anyone with a taste for adventure or love for the great outdoors would be overjoyed by the mecca of tropical plant life.

The island may appear as a paradise for adrenaline junkies, yet there is plenty of white sand to host your attempt to achieve sun kissed skin underneath the Caribbean sun. After exploring the waters, basking in the glorious weather or embarking on a land adventure, the evenings are fairly relaxed all over the island. Very few bars are found on the island, so the atmosphere is designed more to families and couples as opposed to partygoers; the entertainment comprises of excellent restaurants and the occasional karaoke bar.

How do you get around Roatan?

Buses run every 15 minutes from the main stations, covering much of the island. Taxis are readily available and can be negotiated with to prevent tourists being overcharged, whereas water taxis have fixed prices and are typically very reliable. For personal transport, rental scooter companies offer fairly affordable prices.
