The US city of Fort Lauderdale is located in the State of Florida and lies on the Atlantic Ocean coast, roughly 40 km to the north of Miami. The city's average year round temperature of 77 degrees F, with around 3,000 hours of sunshine, make it a very popular tourist destination. The city takes its name from a series of forts which were constructed by the US during the Second Seminole War in the first part of the 19th century. This area runs along Las Olas Boulevard, east to west, from the beach area to the heart of downtown Fort Lauderdale. In addition to the city's arts and entertainment it is also home to the Fort Lauderdale Swap Shop, a large flea market which is on the site of the world's largest drive-in movie theatre - with 13 screens. The International Swimming Hall of Fame is located on Fort Lauderdale beach, and houses a large aquatic complex as well as a museum, theatre, and research library.
