Also known as Haida Gwaii, Skidegate is a uniquely secluded community that maintains the traditions and values belonging to the region. Just over 700 people permanently reside in the small village, so there is a close-knit community vibe, though visitors are welcomed with open arms to witness the selection of attractions. The Haida Gwaii Museum features interesting displays and insights into the fascinating history of the village – it’s prestige grew to the extent that it prompted Skidegate to be awarded the Haida Heritage Centre. Many choose to only pass through the village on their way to a more prevalent holiday destination, or some choose to visit for just a few hours. There is only one food outlet – Dave’s in the Village – which serves a selection of classic North American cuisine.
Alliford Bay is a small port on Moresby Island, which is part of the Haida Gwaii archipelago just off Canada’s west coast. It is the terminus of the popular inter-island route between Alliford Bay and Skidegate, on Graham Island. Although the terminal is rather small, it’s set before an impressive backdrop of tall mountains draped in dense woodland. Moresby Island boasts 1,440 acres of lush pine forest, lakes, grassland and over 9 miles of coastline. It also offers fantastic angling opportunities, with an abundance of blue jacks, springs and halibut in the lakes.
