Best destinations in Europe for students

In between essay writing and exam prep, a holiday is just what you need. Whether you fancy somewhere cheap and cheerful that doesn't eat into your student loan too much, somewhere with amazing nightlife where you can really let your hair down, or somewhere full of adventures to take your mind off revision, Europe is packed with student-friendly destinations.

To help you find your perfect getaway, we've rounded up some of the best destinations in Europe for students. From lively city breaks to relaxing beach escapes, there's something for every travel style.

Best destinations for budget travel: Krakow, Sofia & Prague

If your student loan isn't exactly looking its healthiest, you'll want somewhere that doesn't break the bank and leave you living off baked beans for the next five months. But travelling on a budget doesn't mean you have to sacrifice fun. From cheap eats to free attractions, these European destinations prove you don't need loads of money to have a great time.

Krakow, Poland

Krakow is a favourite with students thanks to its lively nightlife, plenty of attractions, and most importantly – affordable prices. Most of the city is easy to explore on foot, so you don't need to fork out a fortune on transport, and free attractions like the Main Market Square and Planty Park mean you can enjoy the sights without constantly reaching for your purse or wallet.

Sofia, Bulgaria

If you'd rather skip the usual tourist spots, then Sofia is a great option. It's easy to have a good time in the Bulgarian capital without spending much. Eating out is cheap, and there are plenty of free things to do and see – join a walking tour and admire the city's landmarks such as St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, window shop down Vitosha Boulevard, and relax in the pretty park of Borisova Gradina, all without spending a penny.

Prague, Czech Republic

Prague may have got a little more expensive over the years, but it's still a great value option compared to many destinations in Europe. Exploring the main sights, such as Charles Bridge, the grounds of Prague Castle, and the John Lennon Wall, won't cost you a thing. Public transport is affordable too, so it's easy to explore on a budget, whilst food and drink is also reasonably priced, especially in local bars and restaurants - just avoid the main tourist spots.

Best destinations for nightlife: Ios, Berlin & Budapest

If your uni city's nightlife just isn't living up to expectations, it might be time for a change of scenery. Whether you're wanting world-class clubs or relaxed beach bars, these destinations are ideal if you're looking for a good time.

Ios, Greece

When you think of Greek island nightlife, Mykonos might spring to mind, but Ios is a student favourite with a more laid-back, sociable vibe. It's a real all-rounder, with countless bars clustered around the whitewashed town of Chora for nights out, plus beautiful sandy beaches where you can spend the next day recovering (or get straight back on it at one of the beach bars). What's not to love?

Berlin, Germany

For a completely different vibe, Berlin is famous for its cool nightlife. In fact, it doesn't get much cooler than this. Think legendary techno clubs that keep the party going until the early hours (some have notoriously strict door policies, so it's worth having a backup plan), lively streets lined with bars, and buzzing beer gardens where you can enjoy a cold pilsner with your mates. It's the sort of place you'll be talking about long after you've got home.

Budapest, Hungary

If you're looking for a big night out without the big price tag, you can't beat Budapest. Its affordable prices and buzzing nightlife make it a top choice with students. The city's famous ruin bars are a highlight – think quirky drinking spots decorated with graffiti and eclectic decor, often in old, abandoned buildings. But there's more to Budapest's nightlife too, from cocktail bars to organised pub crawls and thermal bath parties, there's something for every student here.

Best destinations for history and culture: Rome, Athens, Dubrovnik

If you've had enough nights out to last you until graduation, then a little culture might be exactly what you need. And lucky for you, Europe is packed with destinations where you can delve into centuries' worth of history, admire incredible architecture and tuck into some seriously good food.

Rome, Italy

When it comes to history, not many places can compete with Rome. From the Colosseum to the Roman Forum and the Pantheon, there's a never-ending list of sights to see that give you a glimpse into the city's fascinating past. Beyond ancient ruins, there's also countless churches, art galleries and fountains too. And then there's the food too. Think pizza, pasta, gelato and a cheeky Aperol Spritz to round things off. For history buffs and foodies alike, Rome is hard to beat.

Athens, Greece

Athens is a city also packed with history and culture, with ancient temples and archaeological sites that'll keep you busy for days. When you're not visiting iconic landmarks like The Acropolis and Parthenon and learning the stories behind the Greek gods, you can browse flea markets, wander through vibrant neighbourhoods and of course, indulge in Greek favourites like gyros, souvlaki and moussaka. For more info, check out our guide to Athens.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

The beautiful Croatian city of Dubrovnik is also a great choice for students. Here, it's less about world-famous landmarks and more about medieval charm and gorgeous coastal views. You can stroll along its famous city walls, admire its impressive towers and fortresses, and stop for coffee or ice cream in the winding cobbled streets. Games of Thrones fan? You can also visit filming locations such as the Jesuit Staircase and Fort Lovrijenac.

Best destinations for adventure: The Soča Valley, Dalmatian Islands, Fort William

More of a thrill-seeker? If you'd rather swap sunbathing and sightseeing for a little adventure, Europe has plenty of destinations where you can get your adrenaline pumping with friends, all whilst enjoying some seriously stunning scenery too.

Soča Valley, Slovenia

The fun literally never stops in Slovenia's Soča Valley. Surrounded by the dramatic peaks of the Julian Alps, it's a playground for adventurous souls. You can enjoy everything from white-water rafting to kayaking, canyoning, hiking, mountain biking and more. And the beautiful views just top it all off.

Dalmatian Islands, Croatia

The Dalmatian Islands might be more famous for their nightlife, but the fun here goes beyond beach bars and clubs. Mljet, home to Mljet National Park, is ideal for outdoor adventures. You can swim in crystal-clear waters and hike through the lush pine forests. But the rest of the archipelago is just as exciting, from rock climbing in Hvar to kayaking in the Pakleni islands and simply sailing along the Dalmatian Coast (Yacht Week, anyone?), so you're guaranteed to have a good time. Fort William, Scotland

Who says you need to catch a plane to have an adventure? If you'd rather stay closer to home (or save your student loan for something else), Fort William is a great spot for exploring the Scottish Highlands. Known as the gateway to Ben Nevis, the UK's highest peak, the area offers countless adventures, from riding gondolas across the mountains, to sailing across lochs and visiting waterfalls, you'll never fun out of things to do. Fancy taking things up a notch? Pack your tent, round up your mates, and make a camping trip out of it.

Best destinations for relaxation: Naxos, Lagos, Himarë

If your uni course hasn't been the easiest, you might be dreaming of a holiday where you can do pretty much nothing, with the biggest decision of your day being what to wear or where to eat. Luckily, Europe has plenty of destinations where you can properly switch off, relax and take a break from uni life.

Naxos, Greece

Naxos is one of the best places to do very little. Days here consist of lounging on sun-soaked sandy beaches, swimming in crystal-clear coves and wandering through whitewashed streets for a souvenir and a few Instagram-worthy snaps. And if you fancy extending your trip, you can easily hop on a ferry to the neighbouring Greek islands of Paros or Mykonos, turning your holiday into a bit of an island-hopping adventure.

Lagos, Portugal

Portugal is another great choice for a relaxing student getaway, especially the backpacker favourite of Lagos. With beautiful beaches and a lively, sociable atmosphere, it's the perfect spot to unwind whilst still having fun. Spend your days catching rays or kayaking along the coast, and your nights sharing Portuguese dishes with friends and mingling with other travellers in cocktail bars.

Himarë, Albania

Albania is having a moment, and Himarë is a great spot for students looking to escape the crowds (and prices) of some of Europe's better-known hotspots. Holidays here are super laid-back – spend your days chilling on beautiful beaches and your evenings wining and dining at waterfront tavernas. And if you fancy doing more than sunbathing and eating, you can hop on a boat trip to explore hidden coves or venture further along the Albanian Riviera.
