Helsingborg Guide

Helsingborg is a Swedish town located in Skane County and is the closest part of Sweden to Denmark, which is visible across the Oresund which is 4 km away. The historic town has a number of old buildings which are a mix of stone built churches and a 600 year old medieval fortress (Karnan) which is located in the heart of the town, that sit side by side with modern commercial buildings.

Helsingborg can trace its history back to 1085 and is therefore one of the oldest towns in Sweden. The town was important for Denmark, who at the time controlled both sides of the strait, due to its advantageous geographical position at the narrowest point of the Oresund. From 1429, crossings made by trading vessels between Elsinore and Helsingborg were subject to a levy which was an important source of income for the Danish Crown. From the middle of the 19th century onwards Helsingborg has become one of the fastest growing cities of Sweden.

Three ferry companies take passengers and cargo to and from Denmark around the clock. The route is popular with day-trippers going to Elsinore or Copenhagen, or simply to enjoy the views from the ferries.
