The Danish city of Helsingor is located in the Helsingor municipality on the north east coast of the island of Zealand, in the east of Denmark.  It is the closest city in Denmark to Sweden, with the Swedish city of Helsingborg just 4 km away.  Castle Kronborg is known the world over as the place William Shakespeare's play Hamlet is set.  There are many other castles around Helsingor that are worth visiting and these include Fredensborg, Frederiksborg, Marienlyst, Gurre Slot and Vor Frue Kloster.  The city, which is situated in the middle of Northern Europe's riviera close to Grib Forest, also has a number of beaches close by such as Hornbaek and Gilleleje.
The National Museum of Science and Technology is a popular visitor attraction in the city and contains demonstrations in the advancement of science, technology and industry.  Also in the museum, which is in the south of Helsingor, there is a large collection of steam engines, bicycles, motorcycles and antique cars along with a display of the developments made in aviation.
From the city's port ferry services operate to Helsingborg in Sweden, which is reputedly the most frequent ferry service in the world with 70 departures in each direction each day.  The ferry terminal is adjacent to the town's railway station which makes the transition from one to the other very easy for travellers.
Helsingborg is a Swedish town located in Skane County and is the closest part of Sweden to Denmark, which is visible across the Oresund which is 4 km away.  The historic town has a number of old buildings which are a mix of stone built churches and a 600 year old medieval fortress (Karnan) which is located in the heart of the town, that sit side by side with modern commercial buildings.
Helsingborg can trace its history back to 1085 and is therefore one of the oldest towns in Sweden.  The town was important for Denmark, who at the time controlled both sides of the strait, due to its advantageous geographical position at the narrowest point of the Oresund.  From 1429, crossings made by trading vessels between Elsinore and Helsingborg were subject to a levy which was an important source of income for the Danish Crown.  From the middle of the 19th century onwards Helsingborg has become one of the fastest growing cities of Sweden.
