It seems a nondescript fact that the beaches face the south as opposed to the north, yet therein lies the charm of Ramsgate. Whereas in neighbouring coastal towns such as Margate, the sun sets at 2pm and the beaches promptly empty, Ramsgate beaches soak up the beautiful rays until the early hours of the evening. The main sands are the prominent attraction for Ramsgate, benefitting from the family friendly environment; playgrounds and swing sets entertain the children and ice cream parlours next to cosy cafes are filled with couples enjoying a break. Just up the shoreline from the beach is Britain’s only royal harbour, consisting of cool bars exuding a cosmopolitan vibe that has slowly crept into Ramsgate’s DNA. Glorious beaches tend to steal the limelight in a coastal town, detracting from the myriad of landmarks that rest inland. Don’t make the mistake of missing out on the impressive architecture lining the centre, the Shrine of St. Augustine and The Grange typically proving the most memorable in a town steeped in tradition. Meandering through the religious sites and buildings leads to the cultural features that are growing in prevalence around the town – the Micro Museum and the York Street Gallery are particular highlights.
Hiring a car may be a good option when travelling around the town, alternatively taxis are readily available for those not wishing to drive. Some choose to cycle, especially in the spring and summer when the weather lends itself to being outdoors.
