JR Kyushu Beetle Jet Ferry (Queen Beetle)

JR Kyushu Beetle Ferry is a Japanese hydrofoil ferry operator travelling between Fukuoka, on the northern shores of Kyushu Island, and Busan of South Korea. The company also links Busan with the Japanese island of Tsushima, nestling halfway between the two nations in the Korea Strait.

Beetle, the company’s sole vessel, was constructed with two hydrofoils which completely lift the hull above the water surface while cruising. With this design, the vessel manages to avoid the choppy waves, resulting in a totally smooth sailing experience. This is also helped by the automatic level-stabilisers and sensors equipped throughout the Beetle; excellent news for those who suffer from sea-sickness.

From the city of Fukuoka, the Beetle ferry embarks from Hakata, a ward of the city within Fukuoka Prefecture. As one of the oldest cities in the country, it was once a popular base for merchants trading with Korea and China during the middle ages, while it also recorded the fastest population growth in Japan in 2015 owing to the growing international tourism, particularly from the influx of cruise ships.

Busan, the South Korean port city is much more than that; it’s dominated by a marvellous mountainous skyline, fringed by golden beaches, dotted with hot springs and famed for its superb seafood. With so much to enjoy once you step off the ferry, the country’s second largest city could well be your next favourite.

As part of JR Kyushu Beetle Ferry’s new service, Tsushima Island can now be reached in just over one hour from Busan. With the shoreline of South Korea visible in the distance from the west coast on a clear day, the island is actually a beautiful subtropical strip consisting of two main islands named Kamijima, in the north, and Shimojima, to the south.

JR Kyushu Beetle Jet Ferry (Queen Beetle) Customer Reviews

  • "Good "

Ferry was on time. New terminal in Busan was spacious and clean. Even on a clear day the journey was a bit bumpy. If you suffer from motion sickness then take some medication before you leave. Ferry is small and you can't walk around but there is adequate leg room for the average person. Toilets were clean. Limited food and drink available to buy.

  • "Ridiculous Taxes (we were asked for and paid 3 separate amounts each)"

Before getting the boarding passes 1000 Yen in cash plus 1600 yen which I was able to pay by card, then after Boarding Passes were issued advise that another 500 Yen each was payable at a machine in cash for a small card. 3100 Yen per person. What are these three separate amounts about? Who gets the money, I’d love to know. As to the Journey there was a bit of “Rock and Roll” but Ferry handled it no problem

  • "Efficient and Effortless! "

Beetle Ferry is a great alternative to flying to Busan and South Korea and effortless abd efficient. Price is compatible but you avoid most of the hassle you get when passing though airports. Also you are disembarked at central port locations not far from the city centres.
