The Interislander ferry service crosses New Zealand's Cook Strait, between Wellington and Picton, bridging the gap between the North and South Islands.
Taking approximately three hours, the route was once described as “one of the most beautiful ferry rides in the world”, with Interislander traversing this scenic, ninety-two kilometre route for over fifty years, transporting more than a million passengers each year in that time. Offering up to eleven crossings a day, Interislander represents an affordable and flexible choice when it comes to exploring New Zealand’s main islands.
Operating three large, high-tech ferries called Aratere, Kaitaki and Kaiarahi, Interislander can carry both passengers and vehicles numerous times per day, following a convenient timetable for your ease of travel. Maori for ‘Quick Path’, ‘Challenger’ and ‘Leadership’, respectively, the Interislander vessels all offer a comprehensive range of amenities including cinemas, luxurious lounges, live bands and child-friendly entertainment. They were also the first ferry operator on the Cook Strait to supply free Wi-Fi on-board.

Having pre booked the Plus Lounge, we were very disappointed that when we arrived in the Plus Lounge the food had gone, we had a campervan and were one of the last to be loaded on to the ferry, the lounge was very busy with rugby fans who had eaten everything in sight, very unfair for those who arrive late to the lounge as they are loading their vehicles, most of the lounge were foot passengers. Maybe access could be allowed once everyone has been loaded rather than during.Read More Read Less
