About Cortes Island

Cortes is one of the Discovery Islands in British Columbia, Canada, found towards the northern end of the Gulf of Georgia. Named after the infamous eighteenth century conquistador of Mexico, Hernan Cortes, the island is, nowadays, known for its tranquillity, sparkling lakes and verdant forests. And, characteristic of the state, Cortes is a playground for outdoor adventurers. Kayaking and sailing across the picturesque rivers and lagoons are popular pursuits, offering mouth-watering views of the mountainous mainland on the horizon. Its namesake museum is a cultural highlight, showcasing everything from indigenous artifacts to exhibits of the indigenous flora and fauna. Also, be sure to peruse some of the local arts and crafts shops, a currently thriving industry. The gateway to Cortes is Quadra Island, situated to the west, across the Gulf of Georgia. Regular sailings link the two islands every day, with the ferries docking in the small village of Whaletown on the west coast.
