Wightlink safeguard route with Pier investment
Date: 21 Sep 2010 09:00 Source: Portsmouth.co.ukPortsmouth ferry operator Wightlink is to plough £3.5m in cash into Ryde pier after engineers warned it could collapse.
Wightlink operate the Portsmouth to Ryde ferry sailing for passengers only and those passengers have always been dropped off and picked up at its terminal on Ryde pier.
But in early August, engineers said the structure was too unstable, and banned any traffic from using it - even mobility scooters.
Now the firm will use the borrowed cash to reinforce the Grade II listed pier, safeguarding its Portsmouth to Ryde route.
The pier will be shored up with steel girders and new wooden boards placed over the top, in a programme expected to last between 13 to 26 weeks.
To help cover its costs Wightlink said it will introduce a toll charge for vehicles using the pier once it is up and running.
In the meantime Wightlink's passenger service is running as normal.
In addition to the Portsmouth Ryde ferry route, Wightlink operate Ferries to the Isle of Wight on 2 other routes - Portsmouth to Fishbourne and Lymington to Yarmouth.
