3 million passengers travelled on axed Portsmouth ship
Date: 17 Sep 2010 15:30 Source: Portsmouth.co.ukAs the Portsmouth Bilbao ferry prepares to leave Portsmouth ferry port for the last time later this month it has been announced that it will have carried 3 million passengers in its time according to the ferry operator.
The Pride of Bilbao has served on the route to the Spanish port since 1993.
It is the only remaining P&O Ferries service in Portsmouth, and will have its last sailing on Saturday, September 25, before finally leaving the port a couple of days later.
Now, by analysing passenger figures, the company has totted up its total impact on the city - roughly three million passengers carried through its terminals over the lifetime of the route.
Port manager Martin Putman estimated that it would be around 10 per cent of Portsmouth's total passenger numbers over this period.
He said: 'When they started the only ferries to Spain were from Plymouth.
'They've grown the market and it's been good for everyone.
'A lot of people have enjoyed travelling on it, from party nights to whale watchers.
'Today things have moved on. I think the ships are better.
'But I think a lot of people have a lot of fondness for it.'
Brittany Ferries will be the only ferry company offering services to Spain with their Portsmouth Santander ferry and their Plymouth Santander ferry.
