Bid to reinstate Shetland-Norway ferry link

With the ferry contract for Shetland due to be renewed by the Scottish Government by 2012, a petition has been launched urging the addition of a link to Scandinavia.
Graham Irvine, the Whiteness resident who started the petition, claimed that not having a ferry link to Norway was costing the isles both economically and culturally.
"We have far closer links with Norway than what we have with Scotland. It is such a lack; I have always wondered why French is being thought in school here, when it should be Norwegian, going by our culture and history," he said.
"Taking advantage of the unique position of the northern isles, I think we deserve a reliable Scandinavian ferry link.
"Any profits made on these sailings could be retained by NorthLink to help fund the lifeline service."
The route was previously served by other operators, including P&O Ferries. NorthLink currently operates sailings between Lerwick and Aberdeen.
The petition reads: "We, the undersigned, call on the Scottish Government to allow NorthLink to operate a summer sailing season to Norway as previously carried out by P&O.
"We believe this would help retain our social, historical and cultural links with Scandinavia, while promoting social inclusion and helping reopen business and tourism opportunities for our islands."
