Ryanair increases baggage charge to £80 for summer

Date: 03 Jun 2010 09:00 Source: Citywire

Ryanair customers will soon have to pay up to £80 to take a second bag on a flight, after the budget airline announced plans this week to increase its baggage charges over the summer.

Ryanair said that during July and August it will increase its charge for the first bag checked in from £35 to £40, and the second bag from £75 to £80.

Meanwhile, for people who check in via the Ryanair website charges will increase from £15 to £25 for the first bag and from £35 to £40 for the second.

It is feared this price hike will hit families hard. A family of four with two bags each, for example, could end up forking out £480 each way. Ryanair also has a smaller weight limit, 15kg, compared to most other airlines.

Ryanair claims the higher fees are designed to 'incentivise' people to check in online in advance and to travel light.

However, Rochelle Turner, head of research for Which? Holiday, said: 'Ryanair might claim that they are incentivising people to travel light, but we think it is more a case of penalising those families who can only go away on holiday during this time'.

'Flying with Ryanair is not always as cheap as it first appears and we would advise passengers to factor in these extra costs when choosing who to fly with this summer,' she added.

You can currently book a Ferry to Ireland, with a car full of baggage from £69 each way. Visit our Irish Ferries page for more info.
