Travellers returning to Ferry travel say Irish Ferries

Date: 12 Jan 2010 15:55 Source: Irish Ferries

The economic downturn and the pressure on family budgets coupled with tighter airport security and the delays and restrictions being encountered by air users are working together to bring about a return to traditional travel values on the part of those moving between Ireland, UK and Continental Europe, according to leading ferry operator, Irish Ferries.

Throughout 2009, and particularly in the period leading up to Christmas, Irish Ferries detected a noticeable drift back to ferry travel on the part of passengers travelling into and out of Ireland.

According to their head of passenger sales, Declan Mescall, people are returning to ferry travel in greater numbers, driven by the need to get value for money whilst avoiding all of the restrictions that have become part and parcel of travel by air.

'Extra security, earlier check-in, longer pre and post flight delays, tighter baggage restrictions and all of the other measures that air travellers have to endure - including fares that fail to measure up on the what-you-see-is-what-you-get scale - have meant that more and more people now prefer the comfort of travelling by car using ferry connections' Mr. Mescall said.

This is evident too when it comes holidays in Britain and France. ‘With their own car, families are discovering the old-fashioned fun that can be found in being able to go where they please and bring back what they like without having to worry about extra charges and allowances’ he said.
