New Portsmouth - Cherbourg service suspended
Date: 20 Nov 2009 00:00 Source: Direct FerriesThe new Celtic Link ferry service between the Portsmouth and Cherbourg was suspended this week on the orders of Britain’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency.
The Norman Voyager was prevented from leaving Portsmouth yesterday evening after crew failed an emergency procedures test, the agency said.
MCA spokesman Mark Clark said that the ship would not be able to sail until a further safety inspection had been carried out.
This would not happen before this afternoon at the earliest, he said.
Celtic Link, which already runs a service between Rosslare and Cherbourg, launched the Portsmouth-Cherbourg service last month after sub-chartering Norman Voyager from rival operator LD Lines.
The vessel makes daily return crossings between Portsmouth and Cherbourg on weekdays and replaces Celtic Link’s Diplomat between Rosslare and Cherbourg at weekends.
A Celtic Link spokesman at Cherbourg said this afternoon that he was still waiting to hear when the vessel would be able to resume operation.
He said that he had no details regarding the MCA’s reasons for suspending the service.
