Algeciras - Gibraltar ferry link plan
Date: 19 Oct 2009 00:00 Source: Lloyds ListA Spanish company is to launch a ferry service between Gibraltar and Algeciras, the first time in 40 years the cities on either side of the Bay of Gibraltar will be linked by sea.
Barcelona-based shipping and logistics group Transcoma will operate a newbuild 22 m catamaran offering four roundtrip sailings a day, with journey times of just 30 minutes.
The project is the fruit of improved relations between Gibraltar and Spain as a result of the Trilateral Forum for Dialogue.
In a nod to the past, the vessel will be named Punta Europe II , a tribute to one of the first ferry boats that worked the route until it was brought to a halt in the late 1960’s by General Franco’s decision to close the border between Gibraltar and Spain. The ferry will target both workers who commute between the two cities and day trippers.
Transcoma spokesman Alfredo Ramos-Argüelles said the concept behind it was one of breaking down borders between Gibraltar and the surrounding Spanish hinterland.
'This will bring the two sides of the bay closer, providing a bridge and point of entry that will normalise neighbourly relations,' he said. “We want to exploit commercial possibilities the bay has to offer jointly with Gibraltar.'
Transcoma has offices in all major Spanish ports and industrial areas and is active in maritime transport, ship agency, logistics and freight forwarding. It also has interests in commercial fishing, port operations, bunkering, real estate and financial services.
