Scandlines and TT-Line strike service deal

Date: 14 Sep 2009 00:00 Source: Lloyds List

Declines in cargo volume and passenger traffic are forcing German ferry operators Scandlines in Rostock and TT-Line in Lübeck into a cooperation agreement.

Until further notice, the companies will offer a joint service from the German port of Rostock to the Swedish port of Trelleborg during the day.

In the morning, one TT-Line vessel will leave Rostock for Trelleborg, while the ferry in the afternoon to Trelleborg will be provided by Scandlines. However, the two companies will continue to operate separate services at night-time.

According to TT-Lines spokeswoman Birgit Bock-Schröder, the cooperation should mitigate the overcapacities from which both operators are suffering. 'The services from Rostock to Trelleborg have lately seen a low utilisation level,' she said.

For Scandlines’ and TT-Line’s clients, the changes in the service have no major implications.

Passengers can buy their tickets to travel with either Scandlines or TT-Line, but will be booked on the other company’s ferry, if necessary. The prices for the journey will not change as a result of the cooperation.

Transport volumes of German ferry operator Scandlines and TT-Line declined seriously in the first half of 2009. Scandlines transported about one-quarter fewer trucks and trailers on its eight Baltic services than in the first half of 2008.

TT-Line’s cargo volumes in the Baltic Sea also declined, by about 25%.
