LD Lines moves Ireland-France ferry service to Cherbourg

Date: 07 Sep 2009 00:00 Source: Lloyds List

LD Lines is introducing a new Ireland France ferry service between Rosslare and Cherbourg from September 19.

The link between the two countries, previously launched between Rosslare and Le Havre in November 2008, is being relocated to operate via the northwest France port of Cherbourg to increase service frequency, with shorter crossing times to and from Rosslare.

The move will utilise the greater capacity, particularly for freight traffic via the port of Cherbourg, which is also already a popular destination with the tourist market travelling directly from the Republic of Ireland.

LD Lines’ Norman Voyager will operate the new service, providing six return sailings each week with a crossing time of 17 hours, compared with the previous 22-hour Le Havre journey duration.

'There is an ever-increasing demand to develop direct Ireland-France ferry links avoiding the UK mainland, and we are responding to the needs of freight customers in particular, who continue to require greater frequency of service and shorter crossings times wherever possible,' said LD Lines managing director Christophe Santoni.

'Providing more sailings and an improved crossing time via Cherbourg, we are confident that the freight and tourist business will now have even greater commercial opportunities to grow.'

Newly built Norman Voyager was introduced by LD Lines in November 2008 to the Portsmouth Le Havre/Le Havre Rosslare services. It has capacity for up to 120 freight vehicles.

The vessel will operate exclusively on the new Cherbourg Rosslare ferry service and will be replaced by the LD/Transmanche Ferries’ Cote d’Albatre as the second ship on LD Lines’ Portsmouth Le Havre route, in tandem with Norman Spirit.
