Stena Line confirms plans for Fishguard harbour
Date: 08 Aug 2009 00:00 Source: Westerntelegraph.co.ukHopes are high that expansion plans for Fishguard’s port could bring a major boost to the north Pembrokeshire economy.
Stena Line has confirmed it is considering a number of potential redevelopments which could bring bigger modern ferries to the harbour.
The port is also earmarked for a marina development, supported by The Crown Estate, Welsh Assembly and Pembrokeshire County Council as part of their plans for economic regeneration in the region.
The marina proposals had been on hold because of a High Court case concerning ownership of the foreshore and seabed at Fishguard, which was finally settled in The Crown Estate’s favour.
Cllr John Davies, leader of Pembrokeshire County Council, said: “The upgrading and expansion of the port of Fishguard and the provision of a new marina complex to service the growth of marine leisure in the Irish Sea are key strategic priorities identified by the council and Welsh Assembly’s regeneration strategy for Fishguard.
“The realisation of these projects will create new employment and growth opportunities for the whole of north Pembrokeshire.”
Stena Line route director Vic Goodwin said: “We are satisfied that we now have a number of options to consider that will ensure both the marina development and ferry operations can compliment each other.”
