Isle of Man ferry completes 15,000th sailing
Date: 03 Aug 2009 00:00 Source: Lloyds ListThe Isle of Man Steam Packet Company's flagship ferry, the Ben-my-Chree, completed her 15,000th sailing across the Irish Sea on July 31st.
It was announced that the milestone was reached on the Isle of Man to Heysham ferry route, with the vessel setting off from the port of Douglas at 08:45.
The Ben-my-Chree first sailed into Manx waters in 1998 and since then has carried more than 2.5 million passengers on Isle of Man ferry services.
Despite having covered more than 875,000 miles, the ship has a reliability record of over 99 per cent.
Mark Woodward, chief executive of the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company, said: "The Ben-my-Chree has been the most intensively used vessel in our history and during this time her record of reliability has been outstanding.
"She has been a fantastic servant to both the travelling public and the company and I am delighted to see her complete this impressive number of sailings across the Irish Sea."
In addition to its Isle of Man to Heysham ferry service, the Steam Packet Company offers ferries to Liverpool from Douglas. Travellers can also catch ferries to Dublin and Belfast from the Isle of Man.
