Portsmouth to upgrade berth to handle LD Lines’ ships

Date: 21 Aug 2008 00:00 Source: Lloyds List

Portsmouth is planning to lengthen two of the harbour’s berths in preparation for the introduction of LD Lines’ new service to Le Havre, writes Sandra Speares.

The berths will be extended by 50m to accommodate the 186m Norman Voyager, which is due to commence operations in November.

Portsmouth ferry port manager Phil Gadd said: “Ships are getting bigger and we have made the investment to cater for this. It’s a real business need. Other ports are making room for larger ships and we are keen to make sure that Portsmouth can be part of this development.”

The port will be building a 10 m wide dolphin — or concrete island — connected to the dock by a walkway which will be capable of taking the weight of the vessel. Work on the new construction, which is due to be completed early next year, is due to go out to tender later this year, and no details of the costs involved have been released so far.

LD Lines’ second vessel on the Portsmouth to Le Havre route will also provide a link to the Irish port of Rosslare, which the Louis Dreyfus subsidiary is keen to exploit from a freight perspective.

The Norman Voyager has a freight capacity of 2,250 lane metres, allowing the transportation of up to 120 trucks or trailers. It can also carry 800 passengers in 110 cabins and reclining seats.

LD Lines is set to introduce a new freight and passenger ferry service between Dover and Boulogne in July 2009. Boulogne Chamber of Commerce has invested €35m ($51.5m) at the port on new facilities aimed at accommodating both conventional and highspeed ferries.
