But Pride is about so much more than glitter, rainbow flags and wild parties.

Behind every Pride parade lies a long history of courage, resistance and the fight for equality. And because the rights of the queer community are, and will continue to be, restricted in many countries, Pride remains an important social statement. What does ‘Pride’ actually mean?

The term “Pride” refers to openness about one’s sexual orientation or gender identity, as well as the visibility and recognition of diverse identities.

The Pride movement campaigns for everyone to be able to live freely and safely, regardless of gender, sexual orientation or identity. The well-known rainbow flag is recognised worldwide as a symbol of diversity and solidarity. It was originally designed in 1978 by the artist Gilbert Baker and has since become a global symbol of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Today, Pride encompasses way more than just parades or street parties. Many events combine political messages with culture, art, music, discussions and educational activities. This mix of experiences is precisely what makes the 2026 Pride season so exciting for many people.

Where does Pride come from? The history behind the movement

The movement’s origins date back to New York City in 1969. At that time, homosexuality was a social taboo in many parts of the world and, in some places, was even a criminal offence. Queer people were discriminated against, persecuted or criminalised. Bars and community meeting places, in particular, were regularly targeted by police raids.

The Stonewall Riots

On the night of the 28th June 1969, the police carried out another raid on the ‘Stonewall Inn’, a well-known gay bar on Christopher Street in Manhattan. But this time, the patrons fought back, and the protests turned into demonstrations that lasted for days. The so-called Stonewall Riots are now regarded as a turning point in the international LGBTQIA+ movement.

A year later, the first ‘Christopher Street Liberation Day’ marches took place in several US cities. These events gave rise to today’s Pride parades. Christopher Street Day, or ‘CSD’ for short, which is celebrated in Germany, also traces its origins directly back to these events.

Why Pride will still be important in 2026

Although many countries have made progress on LGBTQIA+ rights in recent decades, queer people around the world continue to face discrimination, violence and social exclusion. In many countries, homosexuality is still a criminal offence, and people with other identities also continue to fight for equal rights.

Pride therefore raises awareness. The events show that nobody is alone. At the same time, they remind politicians and society that equality must be actively protected. For many visitors, Pride Season is also an emotional place where they feel a sense of belonging as people from different countries, generations and cultures come together to celebrate diversity.
