Sound good? Here's everything you need to know about taking a day trip from Livorno to Capraia

Starting point: Livorno

Livorno is a lively multicultural port city located in Tuscany. Nestled along the Ligurian Sea on the western coast of Italy, it's a popular spot for seafood lovers. Despite its history and character, the city is often overshadowed by traditional Tuscan towns. Instead, many tourists use it as a stop-over before sailing to destinations like Corsica and Sardinia or as a base for day trips to places a little closer such as Capraia.

Destination: Capraia

Capraia is a small island located in the Tuscan Archipelago National Park; a selection of islands and islets off the coast of Tuscany. Although it's a part of Tuscany, Capraia is actually closer to Corsica than mainland Italy. It stands out amongst the other Tuscan islands as it's the only volcanic island in the archipelago, making is a must-visit for those seeking spectacular landscapes. But picture-perfect views aren't all it has to offer. Whether you fancy hiking along the coast, swimming in crystal-clear waters or sampling local delicacies, Capraia has something for everyone.

Taking a ferry to Capraia is a great way to escape the touristy crowds and experience the unspoiled beauty of Italy. Whether you fancy soaking up the sun or hiking in the wild, a day trip to Capraia can be as relaxing or as action-packed as you make it.

Here's our round-up of some of the top things to do in Capraia:

Swim or snorkel at the beach

If you love the beach but hate the sand, then Capraia is for you. The island's coastline is made up of hidden coves and rocky bays where volcanic red rocks clash with the blue of the sea. Capraia's beaches are perfect for those seeking tranquility and adventure, with some bays only accessible by boat such as Cala Rossa, Cala dello Zurletto and Cala di Porto Vecchio. Harder to get to = even less people!

With clear waters and rich marine life, the island is a dream for snorkelling and diving enthusiasts. With their shallow waters, beaches like Cala del Ceppo and Cala San Francesco are popular with snorkellers. Or, if you love to dive, head to Secca del Turco, an area abundant with marine life. Il Miglio Blu, also known as Blue Mile, is also a must. The protected sea corridor is 1100 metres long and it's perfect for both diving and snorkelling.

Take a hike

Italy may not strike you as a hiking destination but thanks to its unique landscape, Capraia is extremely popular with hikers. Don't worry if you're not a pro though as there's something for all abilities here.

Hiking spots in Capraia that we'd recommend include:

  • Stagnone della Capraia and Lago Fiorito (moderate)
  • Porto Vecchio to Le Mulse (hard)
  • Capraia to Punta dello Zenòbito (hard)

Tip: Don’t forget to bring comfy shoes, SPF and a lot of water. And your camera of course - the views here are beautiful!

Italy is synonymous with delicious food so it's no surprise that Capraia offers some amazing dishes. As you would expect from an island, the seafood is a must-try in Capraia, especially the fresh squid. If you love cheese then you’re also in luck as fresh and aged cheeses are popular, in particular goats cheese.
