Can I take an overnight ferry from Calais to Dover?

In general, we recommend arriving at Calais port at least 1 hour before departure. However, if you are travelling with a vehicle, it’s best to arrive 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours before departure to allow time for parking. Calais port is located around 2km from Calais city centre. By car: you can reach Calais ferry port by car via the A16 and A26. By train: Calais Ville, located in the town of Calais, is the nearest train station to the ferry port. By bus: Operators such as P&O Ferries provide bus services for foot passengers, connecting the ferry terminal with the centre of Calais and the train station.

Is there parking at Calais port?

Free parking is available in front of the ferry terminal for drop-off and short-term stays. However, if you're wishing to stay longer, then you will need to park elsewhere.

Once you've arrived at Dover port, make sure you follow the instructions at the port on where to go. You should also be prepared for custom checks and have your passport ready to show.

If you're travelling as a foot passenger, you can get a coach from Dover to London Victoria. The journey usually takes around 2 hours 30 minutes. The train station, which is located about 1.5 miles from the ferry port, also connects Dover with London.

Can you just turn up at Calais ferry port?

Although you may be able to get on the ferry if you turn up at Calais ferry port without pre-booking a ticket, we recommend booking your ferry tickets to Dover in advance to guarantee your place on the ferry. There is often limited space on board and prices can be a lot higher if you don't pre-book your tickets.

When do I need to check in?

The latest check-in time for your Calais to Dover ferry booking should be in your confirmation email.

  • P&O Ferries: 60 minutes before departure for vehicles and motorcycles. 90 minutes before departure for foot passengers and those travelling with pets.
