Valverde Overview

Valverde (Spanish meaning green valley) is a municipality in the Canary Islands in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. It is situated on the northeastern coasts of El Hierro. Set on the very edge of the Atlantic, the first man crossed the Island at Punta de Orchilla, marking the furthest point of the known world before the Europeans discovered America. This little island of only 287 square kilometres and an altitude of 1,501 metres, offers a landscape of great beauty, more than half of which is protected by the Natural Spaces Act. Spectacular cliffs of up to 1,200 metres high and twisted lava formations contrast sharply with the gentle rolling hills at its centre. The abundantly lush vegetation is another of El Hierro's treasures. The town is formed by a network of steep little streets, whitewashed houses and large gardens. Three neighbourhoods form the capital: Tesine, La Calle and El Cabo.

Valverde Attractions

The church of Santa María de la Concepción, built in the 18th century, is the most important in the city. As well as an 18th-century carving of the Virgin, it contains a Cristo de la Columna, a Genoese sculpture of great artistic interest. Facing the church is the city hall, a fine example of traditional Canary Islands architecture. Pozo de las Calcosas is an old settlement formed by stone houses with straw rooves. There are also two small museums in the town centre which are open all year round.
