Stena Line have announced the acquisition of Liverpool Belfast and Heysham Belfast ferry routes from DFDS Group.
During recent years, Stena Line has made extensive investments and improvements across the whole of its route network. The opportunity to acquire the two routes operating to Belfast ferry port in Northern Ireland from Birkenhead ferry port and Heysham ferry port in England became available subsequent to the decision to close the Fleetwood Larne ferry service and provides them with the means to continue to offer "diagonal" services with a long term strategic outlook and scope for development, together with the creation of a major hub operation in Belfast (in conjunction with their existing Stranraer Belfast ferry route, itself the subject of major service enhancement currently).
Included in the purchase from DFDS, which is subject to regulatory clearance, are 4 ships - the chartered Lagan Seaways and Mersey Seaways on the Liverpool Belfast ferry route and the freight carriers Scotia Seaways and Hibernia Seaways, all of which are now to be taken over by Stena Line.
Leading ferry ticket aggregator Direct Ferries has launched a new ferry booking system for travel agents allowing them to make reservations and manage bookings across a vast route network on behalf of their customers.
