What is St Patrick's Day?

St Patrick's Day is a huge celebration of Irish culture, held each year on the 17th March. The day honours the patron saint of Ireland, Saint Patrick, who is remembered for bringing Christianity to Ireland in the 5th Century. Today, St Patrick's Day is celebrated not only in Ireland, but across the world, with parties, parades and festivals.

When is St Patrick's Day 2026?

St Patrick's Day always falls on the 17th March as this is the day that St Patrick is said to have died. This year, it will fall on a Tuesday but most celebrations will start the weekend of the 14th March 2026.

Is St Patrick's Day a bank holiday?

St Patrick's Day is a bank holiday in Ireland and Northern Ireland. However, it is not a bank holiday in the rest of the UK.

How to celebrate St Patrick's Day

St Patrick's Day is celebrated all over the world with a variety of events. Parades have become a popular way to mark the day with marching bands and Irish music, along with festivals with street food stalls and family-friendly activities. Most people dress up in green, Ireland's national colour, or go all out in fancy dress with top hats and leprechaun costumes. During St Patrick's Day celebrations, Irish pubs and bars are also packed with party-goers enjoying traditional Irish food, drink and music in a lively setting.

Unsurprisingly, Ireland is one of the best places to celebrate St Patrick's Day, giving you the opportunity to really immerse yourself in the country's rich culture and traditions.

Dublin

Let's kick things off with the Irish capital. Dublin knows how to throw a party at any time of the year, but during St Patrick's, the city goes all out with celebrations spilling out onto every street.

This year, Dublin's famous St Patrick's Festival will run from Saturday 14th to Tuesday 17th March. The festival started out in 1996 and has become one of the most renowned festivals in the world, attracting people from all over the globe. The four days guarantee endless fun with everything from food stalls to treasure hunts, live music and dance performances creating a buzz throughout the city.

Dublin's iconic parade will take place on St Patrick's Day itself with street performers, marching bands and themed floats passing Dublin's landmarks as crowds cheer on. And in true Irish style, it'll be a lively affair.

How to get to Dublin

You can get a ferry from Holyhead to Dublin. The journey takes about 3 hours 15 minutes, with regular sailings operated by Irish Ferries and Stena Line. Alternatively, you can get a ferry to Belfast from Liverpool or Cairnryan and then continue your journey to Dublin. You can get from Belfast to Dublin in approximately 2 hours.

Belfast

In Northern Ireland, things are just as exciting with 17 days worth of fun. St Patrick's Day festivities in Belfast kick off early on the 1st March with the Seachtain na Gaeilge, a big Irish language festival running until the 17th March, featuring concerts, comedy nights and workshops. From the 13th March, St Patrick's Music Festival will also take over the city with arts events and musical performances.

Then, there's the big day itself. St Patrick's Day begins with the SPAR Craic 10k, where thousands of runners dressed in green run through the city's streets. Afterwards, the famous Belfast St Patrick’s Day Parade makes its way around the city around 1.30pm, with amazing performances, fancy dress and Irish music creating a fun and vibrant atmosphere.

How to get to Belfast:

You can get to Belfast by ferry from either Cairnryan or Liverpool, with services operated by Stena Line. The Cairnryan to Belfast ferry takes 2 hours 15 minutes on average, whilst the Liverpool to Belfast ferry takes about 8 hours.

The best St Patrick's Day celebrations worldwide

Fancy going further afield? St Patrick's Day isn't just celebrated in the Ireland. In fact, you'll find some of the best St Patrick's Day celebrations all over the world. Here's our round-up of some of the best places to celebrate St Patrick's Day 2026:

New York

The USA may be pretty far from Ireland but the country is said to host some of the biggest St Patrick's Day celebrations in the world. And one of the top places to experience them is of course, New York. The city has a big Irish community, with thousands flocking to the streets to wave Irish flags and enjoying the buzzing atmosphere in the city's Irish pubs and bars.

The city's parade is definitely a highlight - New York is actually home to the largest and oldest St Patrick's Day Parade in the world. This year it will be taking place on Tuesday 17th March on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. The parade will start at 11am and finish around 5pm. The atmosphere is electric with marching bands and crowds of people celebrating all things Irish.

Chicago

New York isn't the only American city that knows how to put on a party for St Patrick's Day. The river here tends to steal the show - every year, Chicago River is dyed a vivid shade of green to mark the occasion, a tradition that dates back to 1962. This year, it will take place on Saturday 14th March at 10am - get there early for a good view. Or for an unforgettable experience, book a river cruise and sail along the vibrant emerald waters.

Chicago's iconic Irish parade will follow shortly after. This year is the 70th annual parade and it's expected to be as exciting as ever with Irish bands, dancers and a huge crowd full of green wearing flag bearers. Celebrations continue on Sunday 14th March with another fun parade. The South Side Irish Parade takes place on Western Avenue between 103rd and 115th Streets with yet more singing and dancing.

Sydney

Sydney also has a big Irish community, but it's not just the Irish that come together here - every year, the whole city congregates to the charming streets of The Rocks, home to the St Patrick's Day Festival. The multi-day celebrations will kick off on Thursday 12th March with an outdoor cinema screening, running until St Patrick's Day on Tuesday 17th March.

Sydney's St Patrick's Day Parade will take place on Sunday 15th March at around 11am. It'll start on Pitt Street in the CBD and will see over a 1000 marchers - from stilt walkers to Irish dancers and pipe bands - taking to the streets of Sydney, creating a buzzing and vibrant atmosphere. 

Across the weekend, they'll also be numerous activities and events for all the family, from Irish language lessons to live music, face painting and food stalls. Don't forget to head to Sydney Harbour on an evening too, where Sydney Opera House will be illuminated in green to mark the occasion.

Munich

Forget steins, St Patrick's Day in Munich is all about the Guinness! The German city is home to the largest St Patrick's Day celebrations in mainland Europe. And if their annual Oktoberfest is anything to go by, you're in for a treat.

In 2026, Munich's St Patrick's Day celebrations will take place from Saturday 14th to Sunday 15th March. On the Saturday, Odeonsplatz is the place to be with a pre-parade party which will kick off at 11am with amazing live music performances and international street food stalls. 

Munich's St Patrick's Day Parade will be on the Sunday. The parade will begin at 12pm at Münchner Freiheit with thousands turning Munich's streets into a sea of green. The parade will finish at Odeonsplatz where celebrations continue with a lively open-air festival. Over the two days, Munich comes alive with exciting events, creating a fun family-friendly atmosphere.

Buenos Aires

Argentina is home to the fifth-largest Irish community in the world, making it a great place to celebrate the patron saint. Buenos Aires is at the heart of the country's celebrations, with street parties and a lively buzzing atmosphere everywhere you go.

The city's huge festivities will take place all over the city, especially in and around the Retiro district. St Patrick's Day in Buenos Aires is less about traditional parades and more about parties that last until the early hours. Food and drink stalls serve up Argentinean-Irish delights, crowds don fun fancy dress, live music blasts out and dance performances take over the streets. It's eclectic and exciting and the perfect place to celebrate somewhere a little different.
