Located on the Spanish island of La Gomera is the town of San Sebastian de la Gomera which is the island's capital and home to its port. La Gomera is one of the Canary Islands and its port is located on the ferry route to the islands of Tenerife, La Palma and El Hierro. The city has an interesting historic past and is regarded as the main centre for culture and commerce on the island. Christopher Columbus spent time on the island and San Sebastian de la Gomera was his final point of departure on the way to his discovery of America. Popular attractions in the city include the Torre del Conde which is a medieval fortress and the oldest preserved building on the island. Also of interest is the Church of Our Virgin of the Assumption, the museum of religious art works from the 16th to the 19th centuries and the Chapel of St. Sebastian which was constructed around 1530. Also popular is the well, Casa de la Aguada, where legend has it Christopher Columbus took water from it and baptised the newly discovered continent with it.

The city can trace its history back to the latter part of the 15th century when Alonso Fernandez de Lugo captured the island and made it the possession of the Crown of Castile, and from then on it began to gain economic power. Popular attractions in the city include a number of churches and the Shrine of Virgen de las Nieves and is where a centuries old tradition takes place: the descent of the island's patron saint. The famous Calle Real street has been declared a Property of Cultural Interest and a Historic-Artistic Site and is the city's main street. It is mainly cobbled and is the location of the main shops, squares, houses and interesting buildings.
From the city's port, ferry services operate to Cadiz on the Spanish mainland, Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote.
