The Stena Hollandica is 1 of the 2 largest superferries in the world and sister ship to the Stena Britannica. Launched in May 2010, the Stena Hollandica's modern onboard facilities include 2 restaurants, 3 bars, a coffee bar, an onboard shop, an internet room and even a cinema.

Onboard Cabins / Reserved Seating

There's a range of high quality cabins onboard the Stena Hollandica, all with en-suite facilities, towels and shower gel. Each cabin also features high quality mattresses so you'll enjoy a great night's sleep. For reserved seating, upgrade to the Stena Plus Lounge where you'll find a wide choice of seats for you to relax in as well as complimentary hot and cold beverages, a choice of newspapers.

Onboard Food and Drink

Choose from a variety of places to eat and drink onboard during your crossing and menus to suit all at the Taste restaurant or Metropolitan á la carte restaurant. There's a range of bars too including Riva bar, Taste wine bar, Sundeck bar (weather dependant)and the Barista coffee bar.

Onboard Shopping

There's plenty of bargains to be had in the Stena shop with a range of gifts, jewellery and fragrances - all cheaper than the high street on offer.

Additional Onboard Facilities

The ship also includes a Bureau de Change, the C-View lounge, a Gaming area, free WiFi throughout the ship, a cinema, a news room/magazine lounge and an internet room.

Travelling with Children

The Stena Hollandica onboard ferry entertainment aims to keep kids and teenagers entertained with fun activities, while at the same time letting adults relax on their ferry journey. There's a children's area with toys and games and a teenager area with video games.

Everything that needed to happen happened smoothly and with great efficiency as far as boarding and disembarkation were concerned. The ship itself was reasonably modern in its facilities and comfortable. Prices were reasonable.

"Facilities are fine, information lacking"

There is insufficient information regarding the time of opening the terminus and then the timing through to boarding the ship. There is no information to allow planning of snacks, toilet breaks etc. we waited outside the gates until 6:30 (OK,but it would have been nice to know) and after checking in we moved to another barrier where we waited over an hour until allowed to board the vessel (not acceptable to not know the duration - could not leave the car for fear of blocking the queu behind.). Inside the ferry all was fine. There was then no information regarding the time that the wake up call would be given. At 5:30 am (one hour before disembarkation) the wake up call came. We visited the cafeteria for a quick coffee and a bun, but were then called to the car deck 4 just a few minutes after the call saying last breakfasts were being served, only to carry the coffee down the stairs to the car, where we waited another hour before leaving the vessel. It is apparent that there is insufficient information given here to enable planning for embarkation and disembarkation by passengers. Finally the plan of the ship was A5 size and the text was illegible. The plans are in A4 and those useful on the Gothenburg Kiel leg. All in all the Harwich / Hook of Holland service is considerably poor versus the Gothenburg-skirl service

Staff very professional and facilities comfortable. I took a night ferry, the weather was windy so we arrived an hour late. This wasnt a,problem but having woken early for breakfast i was peeved to find the restaurant wasnt open for an hour due to the late arrival. I might have missed an announcement but the notice on the restaurant hadnt been changed to inform passengers.

Stena and the Hollandica and Britannica made the 7 hour crossing much less of a chore than I was expecting. Always somewhere to sit, the food was of good quality and reasonable price given the captive audience and embarking and disembarking were a breeze, well done Stena... I will be back!

I jave to say it was a great experience. The staff at the port were all super friendly and warm. The boat was immac, the food was decent enough, but the crew on board were the best. Friendly, helpful, and created an atmosphere of welcome. All this on a car ferry I know seems a bit over the top but, a smile costs nothing but is priceless.

What I enjoy the most about the trip was the 2 berth standard cabin, it was very spacious, clean with 2 beds and private bathroom/shower. The ferry was also punctual, border control was fast and efficient. The few minus points: - Main course served on board was bland, accept for the cakes. I'm diabetic and needed to get something in the middle of the night, but the help desk was empty. Luckily for me and another diabetic who had the same problem there were some packs of sugar for drinks, but no drinks! I had to eat white sugar. There should always be someone on the help desk.

"Relaxing way to travel "

Used Stena line for return journey from the Hook of Holland. Chose the overnight option for the first time, including a cabin and we all really enjoyed the experience. The cabin was clean and comfy. We loved seeing all the lights of the port and ships as we left the Hook. Then in the morning, we awoke to views of the countryside near Harwich.

I enjoy my travels with you. I always book a cabin to be able to sleep and a place to leave my things when having a wander. One of the suggestions I have is to show UK time and European time on board. As most of our time pieces are WiFi controlled, you are never sure when they’ve adjusted. Another would be to have free drinking water available. I took some with me, but could only find bottles in the restaurant, which I found rather expensive and most of the food was fatty food. I still like travelling with Stena, will just be better prepared next time.

Worst company I have ever had the misfortune to deal with. No customer service, now no telephone service at all. Message on answering machine says free to change on website, but charged 75.00 anyway to change sailing due to coved. Now can’t make return boat and can’t contact by phone so lost money. Very easy driving on and off the ferry. Impeccably clean ferry with great facilities. Friendly staff and great duty free shops. Toilets clean but the Dyson hand dryer looked very grubby. Great price on our midweek sailing with the camper van. Overall very pleased.

Direct Ferries are an absolute disgrace to the travel industry, gives the impression that the operations are run from someone's front room. Conveniently unavailable during any crisis, will never be used again by myself or anyone I know who wants to visit Europe. Can't fault Stenna line, they undid the mess made by Direct Ferries and didn't sting me for more money. At one stage Direct Line wanted £170 administrative fees !!!

"Nice ship!"

Seemed to be plenty of room on the car decks, however the off ramp was rather abrupt angle for low car and grounded very easily. Not enough room in the 'special' seating area, was all fully booked so couldn't access this. Other lounge seats were not the best for comfort, over a very long crossing and not enough choices other than to get a cabin (at a fairly high cost for a day crossing) if you want somewhere comfortable! Outbound journey left about 45 late but seemed to make up time, inbound was reasonably on time , but experienced long delays in unloading once in port. Not a lot to do onboard, unless you want to watch a movie for a couple of hours.

The only issue we had was prior our trip when we were unable make a simple alteration to our booking online as described on the website. On the first trip out everything was great, but on the return there were a few issues. The toilets were not kept as clean, despite being asked not to sleep on the sofas and benches people still did, staff were non smiling in the cafeteria and the restaurant was closed! We had booked the lounge which I believe is not available to children under 8 but we had a child in there who was screaming and yet no staff member said anything!

"Brilliant crossing "

We travelled from Harwich to Holland (and returned) as a party of seven. The efficiency of the whole operation was apparent and we thoroughly enjoyed this part of our journey. We will definitely do it again. We booked cabins to enjoy some quiet time and additional comfort when we were not exploring the boat or enjoying a meal or a game of cards. The only complaint was the walls etc of the cabin etc were pretty grim. Possibly bodily fluids or spilt found/drink unfortunately detracted from the enjoyment of the cabin in our return journey. The linen was perfectly clean but it’s a shame they seem to neglect the overall space.

The whole trip was fantastic, food was great, lots of things to kids and adults and lots of sitting places. One I would suggest is maybe stock more games in the shops like playing cards incase travellers forget their own and can purchase on the Ferry. The entertainment was also good.

Wasn't overly pleased to have been given such a small bunkbed cabin for me, my wife and 7 month old child. I had to reschedule my return trip 2 and a half weeks before the departure date so I was surprised that we were left with no choice but to select a bunked cabin for three of us. This company are quite unhelpful. Phone number doesn’t work, can’t speak to an actual person the number just dies. When you try to manage your booking online it always says error which is infuriating. So when I finally got round to adjusting my journeys they cancelled my outward cabin and then gave me two single cabins coming home which is bizarre! Lucky for us stenaline on board we’re very helpful and I will always be booking directly through them for future bookings.

We booked a pet friendly cabin via Direct Ferries, which we were surprised to find as the Stena Line site did not have any availability. When we arrived and checked in we found that what we had actually booked was a cabin and a kennel crossing for our dog. We had no choice but to go ahead with the journey but this was absolutely not what we had wanted. Direct Lines booking process was at best unclear and misleading. Having said that I could not fault Stena Line themselves. The issue is with Direct Ferries.

Overall it was okay. Very punctual and the staff on board very friendly and helpful We ate in the Taste restaurant - the choice of food was acceptable but would be better if it was warm. Cold chips are not the best lol 😆 The size of the meal though was good though and also that you could help yourself to mayonnaise and ketchup. It was very relaxed leaving the boat the desk day and the crossing was very smooth 😌

Service has worsen compared to the last year. Nice we were allowed earlier to get on board but it was late, we were kicked out of the cabin 45 minutes before arrival. Spent over an hour on deck waiting to leave the ferry inhaling carbon dioxide. Then another hour or more waiting to go through border check in. Generally quite dissapointing experience.

Good trip both ways arriving on time. Cabin is essential for travelling with children just so they have a space to move around. Meals are reasonable 30EURO for 2 adults and 2 kids meals. Times for meals are restricted so you should check when they are serving with the restaurant staff when you get on the ship. Quick departure off the ship.

"A bit shocked"

After my first booked vehicle broke down I had to change vehicles from a big van to a suv which obviously is smaller. I booked with flexi in case something goes wrong. Knowing this I made the phone call quite relaxed until the lady on the phone told me I have to pay 140 quid because car space is more expensive.......... I was shocked because I thought smaller vehicle not a problem just swap registration and that's it. I was very disappointed about that but other than that as always an enjoyable journey.

A long boring trip with very little to do on board other than spend money but even the shopping is limited. From sitting in the van to getting through our new border controls took 55 minutes in UK a breeze of under 5 minutes in Holland, with a 4 hour drive ahead of us that was an unacceptable welcome home, illegal immigrants treated better! Boat was clean and presentable in a ferry type way, but not much improved since the 70’s over all.

"Great trip, highly recommend but a few things to work on"

In general it was a very easy, relaxing and pleasant journey to the Netherlands, with few drawbacks. During the check in process there’s no need to make passengers leave their seats in the waiting room until there’s a security team ready to chest their bags. Not great can queuing up twice at that time of day. It’s crazy. Old people, children etc. Let them stay seated and then call them up row by row or something. Only one team working on security checks so obviously that’s going to take time. No one wants to queue twice. Onboard was fun, clean etc. The basketball court was fun. Would be good to know about carbon footprint on average per passenger compared to, say, train or air travel. Also would be good to know about what Stena Line is doing for the environment. Sea water, foil slick and foam etc at Harwich looked bad. So did the exhaust fumes. Free drinking water on board should be mandatory. Drinks are pricey. Cabin was excellent and pretty good value. Fresh juices and better salads and vege options at lunch would have been nicer than so much meat! And the sate was terrible! Lastly - better signage for the metro station at Hook of Holland. The one ticket machine for RTM services is a bit confusing - we only found out the hard way that those tix don’t work on the buses. Signage for buses was also bad. Customer services were very helpful but a few more signs, clearer instructions for onward travel would be really helpful. Thanks!

Having grown tired of the nightmare that Dover Calais crossings have become, this year we decide to go overnight between HArwich and Hook of Holland. The crossing is more expensive but we saved on the cost of two hotel stays to break the journey so it worked out about even costwise. We enjoyed a clean compact cabin with ensuite and the crossing took hours of the driving time, definately recommended.

"Love the comfort room!!"

I wasn't looking forward to the 9hr journey on a ferry, so we booked a comfort room to try and get some sleep. I have to say, the room was stunning, had a fridge, hairdryer, fab shower etc. They don't have specific shampoo and conditioner though, just general 'shower gel' - which is fine, but not with my hair 🙂 As previously stated on other reviews, there was only one of everything in the fridge, but that didn't bother us too much - I'd took some tea bags and milk to the room from our camper!! Sleep wise, the bed was so comfy that it easy to sleep through the night, so we woke up as we docked into Harwich! As the trucks all went off first, we had time to get ready and have a cuppa. The 'alarm' was fed through the cabins, and started with birds tweeting and an announcement - so you needn't worry about oversleeping. They serve full and continental breakfast, and the food is very reasonably priced! All in all, would 100% recommend, but with a comfort cabin!!

"Ferry is the best"

In this age of flight anxiety and blocked ports to Calais, a gentle and relaxing trip can be had from Harwich if travelling to or through Europe. For us it was a perfect route to the German Baltic coast, affording us a good night's sleep on the overnight ferry, before the long drives either side of the channel. Check in was swift, the cabin spacious enough for 2 with good shower and toilet facilities. Highly recommended for a lazy trip abroad with none of the fuss.

We decided for the first time to drive catch to Holland to see family due to disruption at airports etc the cost was only a small amount more than flying but I had the convenience of having the car with me so no bag drops ,baggage belts or losses. Our both legs of our journey the the boat was good and clean, catered for our very little needs and was punctual. The experience was marred by the very prolonged passport checking at\ both ends. "Two different experiences"

Went too and from the Netherlands on the same boat for a holiday postponed by 2 years. Going out on the full night boat we had a satisfactory cabin and complementary dinner. Very little choice. No glasses in cabin.. " due to covid" ... Very unhelpful staff member at customer care. Asked about breakfast details.. " don't know" .. could have explained details were on a card in the cabin! Instead thought he was being funny. Very rude. On the day boat back. Had Captain s cabin, fantastic... Including lots of glasses! Also much better meal for a 6 euro upgrade in the waiter serviced restaurant.. with wonderful staff who couldn't do enough to be helpful. Less learnt. Maybe the dayboat is better.

we checked in at 19:30 for a 22:00 sailing. Everything was smooth to get onto the ship. Staff was helpful in securing us a great cabin for a family of 5. Ship was clean and comfortable and on time. (We've had time delays with Irish Ferries in the past, not so with Stena) Would sail again (Hook of Holland to Harwick overnight)

All facilities at the ship were satisfactory, but waiting at passport control makes you think to avoid any sort of travel abroad. Almost 3 hours wait with children screaming for toilet and food is not worth a few days holiday. Once all trucks were cleared, it was was our turn. This is the result of bexit, but no talks about it.

"Could be better "

Our outbound experience was perfect. The return journey was not. The staff were rude, especially guest services and the barista coffee shop. I was charged over 38 Euros for 2 bottles of water, 2 fish and chips, that were lukewarm and 2 apple pies, I should have questioned this, but was too stressed, due to children running riot around the restaurant area unsupervised. Until departure, there was no policing of the mask policy by staff. At departure, a four ringed officer, was rude and condescending. His attitude was not one of passenger courtesy, I am surprised he didn’t end up getting punched. He finished his rant by saying the he was the one that would make sure the mask policy was fully adhered to. He did this standing next to 2 passengers in his immediate vicinity, one not wearing a mask and one with the mask not covering his nose. It was like that throughout the crossing. Your safety briefing is an absolute waste of time. The female voice is not understandable and definitely not commanding. I am sure 99% of passengers did not know what to do for seven short and one long. Overall the return journey was a bad experience.

"Harwich to Hook of Holland 2nd January 2022"

Being very concerned about whether I had the correct paperwork I arrived very early leaving plenty of time to correct problems. Being that early allowed everything to be checked and I was offered an earlier sailing with a mandatory cabin for this nighttime sailing. The marshaling and processing of the cars, vans & motorhomes was very efficient with onshore staff being very pleasant and cheerful in a most helpful way. The ship, Stena Brittanica was clean, well signed, and very comfortable and in the morning the breakfast was had a very wide choice of welcome food in a clean well kept dining area. This has been a most welcome experience and one which avoids France perfectly. Thank you, Stena Line and a happy New Year to all.

Great ship and staff. Excellent cabin even for basic inside 2-berth. Check in and immigration controls in UK and NL were both rather slow and there was no queue management so felt a bit unfair when some lanes went fast than others. Also disappointed that you had to pay for wifi on the Hollandica on the NL>UK leg when it was free on the Britannica on the UK>NL leg. Overall though very good. Well done Stena!

Unfortunately on the day of travel there was a marked concern with COVID 19. Germany and Holland have increased in cases. Literally hours before departure we decided, sadly it was to risky to make the trip. We would not have been able to quarantine or lockdown in any country we visited. We have not had a holiday in 6 years so it was not a decision we made lightly.

The Gates open 3 hours before departure giving you plenty of time to board the ship and get settled in We had a lovely Evening meal in the restaurant and then relaxed in some of there really comfortable seats We could have gone to the cinema or one of the bars but it was blowing a gale we knew it was going to be a rough night 😂🙈 The inside Cabin we booked was nice and Snug 👍 It had a nice bathroom with a shower There was a tv on the wall and bunk beds, Im 6ft 5 and i went on the top bunk It was really comfortable and was enough room without feeling cramped Slept like a log thank God 😂 At 5.30am is the cheeping of birds and they announce breakfast is being served You can have as much as you want full English or whatever for 15 pounds Great start to the day 😀 At 6.30am we left the ship refreshed considering it was a really rough crossing we were feeling really good Will definitely do this again 😃 👍

Even though the trip from Holland there was no problems with mask or the vaccine paperwork.. I was fully jabbed and also did pcr test in uk on the second day. I took a negitive test for uk Gov before setting off for Holland. Once at the port I told the lady I was vaccinated and except with a work permit I work in Germany also did not stop in Holland. I was sent to the van in the car park and payed 65 british pounds for a test I knew would be negitive. I resent paying this money and feel conned..the uk Goverment was supposed to make the price of travel cheaper.. If it was stena policy to have a pcr test it should have been cheaper and in the price of the ticket. Not a happy bunny. My sailing experience however was a good one.

I just sailed from HoH to Harwich and was impressed on every level. All aspects of the journey exceeded my expectations. The food and cabin were excellent and the crew were extremely pleasant and accommodating but most importantly of all was the attention to safety with regards to COVID-19. I had my hands sprayed on boarding and on entering the restaurant and everywhere one looked there were a large number of crew members doing nothing but wiping down surfaces and generally disinfecting. An admirable operation which I look forward to experiencing again.

Pleasant crossing. The lounge ares was not open so not anywhere to relax apart from table an chairs area. This was obviously because of infection control due to the Coronavirus , and it was good to know that precautions were made. However , I think the lounge area is an important area for travellers who want to travel so I think the seating areas could have been switched around, and the table and chairs areas outside the restaurants closed off instead . The use of hand sanitiser was available and it was evident that Stenna was doing all they could to prevent the spread of infection .

"Slightly Grasping"

The trip was a bit choppy, but that isn't surprising given the weather. The cabin was clean and functional. The staff were unfailingly helpful and polite. The food options for supper were unapetising, so I didn't buy any. The breakfast was greasy and the orange juice from the dispensers was sickenly sweet. My biggest complaint was the wifi being expensive, awkward, and stingy. I purhcased the option for wifi for the entire voyage, but because I embarked a couple of hours prior to departure the ticket had expired and I had no internet in the morning. Seeing as the ship was already in port and presumably had access to ground-based internet, this felt stingy and grasping. Making the wifi token cover the whole trip when it is described as lasting for the whole trip might help. Overall there are lots of little extras where simliar industries don't charge, and it feels as though one had to be on ones' guard against unnecessary expenditures. I get why ferries are the third choice for crossing the channel, I just feel more could be done to fight that.

This was an excellent crossing on a superb ferry - very steady comfortable and far superior to most other ferries that I have used. Staff were most helpful and a credit to Stena. The facilities were excellent, clean toilets/washrooms and excellent dining services. Embarkation and disembarkation were efficient, fast and orderly. My only complaint is about the food and catering. In itself it was good, food hot, and excellent service - but it was bland, and seemed as though it was fresh from the can or microwave. Not the best value for money. A small cup of coffee at €2.90 and a 'normal' cup at €3.90 was ridiculously overpriced for what I got. Shame, really, as beer or cider was comparatively much cheaper - not good for drivers?

"A first trip on the Hook of Holland to Harwich ferry"

We decided to try the routing from Hook of Holland to Harwich for the first time and overall, it was a real pleasure and we also returned to Europe on the same route. We booked the flexible ticket which included access to the Stena lounge as we needed to be able to change the dates if we had to. The lounge was full but the passenger section of the boat was almost empty. We only stayed a short while in the lounge as the facilities were better in the main part of the boat. It would also be more pleasant if mobile phones could be banned from the lounge as there were some very disturbing moments in there. On our return trip, many of the items shown in the self-service restaurant were not available, which was rather disappointing. However, we would probably use this route again, but we would not pay extra for the lounge.

We had a very gentle and relaxing crossing from Harwich to Hook of Holland on probably the nicest ferry. The staff were helpful, the boat was spotless and the facilities were excellent. It didn’t feel like we were on there for seven hours! It helped that we paid for the premium lounge however the lounge on the Irish crossing we did at Christmas had a better lounge. The only things that were missing is more food available in the lounge and the Wi Fi should have been free and much much faster. That said, we had a pleasant crossing.

never been on a ferry before, usually travel by planes but this time I had to take the wee dog across the Europe so we have chosen Stena Line and we don't regret. after driving 450 miles there is nothing better than having your own cabin with the toilet 🚽and the shower 🚿. rooms are well silenced so you can't hear much from the corridor or your neighbour's TV 📺 very kind and talkative bar tenders where I have spent some time as well good facilities, cinema, restaurant, lounge area with the big TV, kids play area, couple of arcade machines as well. I was worried about 7 hours boring trip but actually I would recommend it and I would do it again

"Trip To England"

The ship was very modern, clean and above my expectations in comparison with other ferries I have used, to travel to England. The cabins are very modern and have Satellite TV. The prices onboard (Bar, Breakfast) are not too expensive as per other ferry companies. I would definitely use this ferry again.

"Nice overall experience"

There is a lot of entertainment on the ship, time flies nicely as there are facilities to do your own stuff (watch stuff on your own device, listen to music, read a book, enjoy the view) but also there is a cinema, casino, restaurants and bars, etc. Food-wise I did not see much choice for vegans so on my way back I brought my own food. Toilets were overall clean however the restaurant and bars area was not that clean and tidy at some point late in the journey. I would strongly recommend considering a quiet area that is indeed quiet. There were babies, kids, and adults on a few drinks everywhere so peace and quiet would have been possible in a private cabin only I believe.

"Amazing experience! "

Never travelled by ferry before especially not while towing a caravan, loaded quickly and safe, given the keys to our room which was perfect, TV and shower as well! We enjoyed a lovely meal and breakfast on our journeys and the staff were all very pleasant. 100% will be traveling on the Stena Line again!

"Not what though it would be "

My return ferry was cancelled by ferry operator due to maintenance repairs etc... I was offered a new ferry tickets next available ferry. And for our troubles we were told we will get a Upgraded cabin. Instead of 2 berth we have been promised 3 berth family cabin. Well... to our surprise a 3 berth was exactly the same as 2 berth cabin!!! Unless we were given a wrong one... 🤷🏻‍♂️ We have had a meal on the ferry also and it wasn’t great for what they charge. Overall average experience...

"Watch out for "Premium Parking" - it doesn't exist! "

Stena Line is great. Direct Ferries not so much! During my phone booking I was upsold "Premium Parking" which I was told would allow me on to the ship earlier and at the front, this is a lie. The service doesn't exist, its purely a first come first serve process at the port. I have already had a huge headache with the customer service team who in my opinion need some training in basic customer service, hugely disappointed. I won't be booking via Direct Ferries again, my advice is to either book directly with Stenaline or drive the extra miles to Calais.

Use this crossing a couple of times a year and usually have nothing to remark on the service; it serves a purpose and everything works. This time, however, I’d like to give a big Thank You to the housekeeping crew who found my mobile phone and promptly handed it in so I could be reunited with it prior to disembarking at Harwich. "Rude Restaurant manager"

We were charged 22 euros for a very poor breakfast - I questioned why the fruit selection was so low - there was only melon and cut up oranges - normally full spread - clearly the kitchen couldn’t be bothered to cut anymore fruit. The restaurant manager snapped at me - what do you want? What I didn’t want is that attitude first thing in the morning - and told him to forget it - he started say I was moaning and acted in a racist manner by saying bloody British under his breath. The manager came and the restaurant manager started spouting how he had witnesses - he then continued to try to initmidate by strutting around discussing the issue with his staff. Terrible behavior.

Not really a composer of reviews but why not. Its Sunday. I am not exactly a regular user of ferries, but have used the Harwich to NL service maybe 7 or 8 times over the last few years. Normally I fly budget, so my experiences on boats are really a comparison to this. Lets be honest, boats are slow. Saline is a pretty viscous solvent and fluid dynamics are a harsh mistress. Pushing a small floating metallic town through any liquid would take a while, especially if the aim is for everyone to survive the experience. A one hour flight to Amsterdam becomes a 7 hour investement. Are there advantages? There are. Let us consider them. You are probably reading this because you have a mortal fear of flying, or because (like me) you love you car. Possibly too much. You may also be thinking of moving copious amounts of stuff from one country to another. The good news is that fluid dynamics work in your favour here. Bouyancy in particular: your baggage is weightless on the high sea. Almost no extra fuel is burned by how much junk you bring. So your allowance is limited only by your imagination, the amount of stuff you have, plus the carrying capacity of your beloved vehicle. Usually I book a cabin because the relative cost is very small relative to the sanctuary they impart upon the weary traveller. The ability to finely control exposure to communal spaces and your fellow man is glorious. While having your own shower and porcelain express leaves you feeling like a royal, mastering your own climate with the air conditioning makes you truly feel like a God. Free WiFi is a bit bleh but at least its there. And free. I am a scientist, so too poor to use the paid internet so no comment on that. There is also something pretty humbing about driving your onto a boat alongside massive cargo trucks. Emasculating some might say, as your pride and joy becomes plankton in a sea of axels. Quite a fascinating glimpse into infrastructure, logistics and the real economy if you ask me. Sometimes I think customs is a pretty cool job, just snooping around shipping containers all day, looking at the weird stuff humans spend their money on. Not sure why, but I find ferry passengers are just chilled and nice to be around. I think most people stay pretty reasonable while their density stays below a certain threshold. Finally, I love how truckers have VIP status and basically get their own private deck. Presumably this is to minimize their exposure to civilians like me. A shame though, because I would not mind hanging out with them to be honest. They probably have nice stories or annecdotes about machines and life on the road. Reminiscing about fuel prices, epic traffic jams, their favourite junctions, etc. Especially I like seeing the massive Dutch guys and marvelling at their bigness. Honestly after living there for 9 years I never fully got used to how tall the Dutch can get. Apparently its their dairy consumption, but I find it hard to believe there is no genetic component. What I love most is that they are so chilled and laid back depsite their epic proportions. Sail Stena Line

"All but"

The ferry crossing was very pleasant with perfect hosting by all staff,both directions. The “All but” comes from access to the terminal which is not Stena’s problem. My sat nav packed up near Dordrecht but no problem I thought, follow Road signs. You may not be aware but there are no signs for the Hook of Holland until you are almost upon it. I made it by the skin of my teeth and the goodwill of your staff at the other terminal in south who called ahead to say I was on my way. Big thank you to them.
