The Italian town and port of Porto Empedocle lies on the Strait of Sicily, on the island of Sicily. Agrigento, the town served by the port, is also a major tourist centre due to its rich archaeological legacy and is also an agricultural centre for the surrounding region. Sulphur and potash have been mined locally since Minoan times up until the 1970s, and were exported around the world from the nearby harbour of Porto Empedocle.
