London Marathon 2026: Everything you need to know

This April, the London Marathon takes over the capital’s streets once again. Since 1981, this world-famous race has brought together celebrities, elite athletes and everyday runners giving it their all as they sprint (or stroll) past some of London’s most iconic landmarks.

Tens of thousands of spectators flock to the city’s pavements, cheering on family members, friends and strangers alike as they raise money for great causes. Pubs are packed out, witty signs fill the crowds and the atmosphere is well and truly buzzing. And this year promises to be no different.

When is the London marathon 2026?

The London Marathon 2026 will take place on Sunday 26th April, with over 50,000 runners expected to take part. Interest has reached record levels this year, with an amazing 1,133,813 people applying through the public ballot.

What time does the London Marathon start?

The London Marathon uses staggered start times known as ‘Start Waves’ which begin at 9:30am, with the final runners setting off at 11:30am. Start times are allocated based on runners' predicted finish times, so if you’re there to support or wave someone off, make sure you check with them beforehand when they’ll be leaving.

However, the elite wheelchair and elite women’s races begin slightly earlier. The wheelchair races are set to start at around 8:50am, with the elite women’s race following shortly after at about 9:05am.

When does the London Marathon finish?

The London Marathon officially lasts for 8 hours from the time the final runner sets off. The Mall closes at 7:30pm and if runners are still participating after this time, the finish line will then move to St James’s Park until it closes at midnight.

How long is the London marathon?

The London Marathon is 26.2 miles long (or around 42km), following a mostly flat route through the city’s closed streets.

Where does the London Marathon start?

The London Marathon starts in either Greenwich Park or Blackheath. The exact location depends on the runner’s assigned start colour, which is based on their predicted finish time.

Where does the London Marathon finish?

The London Marathon finishes on The Mall. After starting in Blackheath or Greenwich, the route passes famous landmarks such as Cutty Sark, Tower Bridge, Canary Wharf and the Embankment, before leading runners to the finish line at The Mall. The backdrop of Buckingham Palace makes it an iconic place to end the race!

Where to watch the London Marathon

Although you can watch the London Marathon from pretty much anywhere along the route, some spots tend to be better than others. Here’s our pick of the top places to soak up the atmosphere and cheer everyone on:

Cutty Sark

Located around 6-7 miles into the race, Cutty Sark is one of the best places to watch the London Marathon. It’s known for its lively atmosphere, with crowds gathering here to motivate runners early in the race.

Tower Bridge

Tower Bridge is probably the most iconic place to watch the London Marathon. It’s located around mile 12 which is nearly half way in the race. The energy is electric and with one of London’s most famous landmarks looming in the background, it makes it an extra special place to watch.

Canary Wharf

Between miles 18 and 19, Canary Wharf is also one of the top places to watch the London Marathon, as crowds gather beneath the glittering skyscrapers. It's a great place to support runners at one of the toughest points in the race.

Embankment

Embankment, located at mile 23, is known for its energetic atmosphere. It's the perfect place to motivate runners and give them that much-needed boost to keep going as the finish line comes into sight.

The Mall

Watching the runners cross the finish line on The Mall is an emotional experience, so if you’re looking for feel-good vibes, this is the place to be. Expect cheers and lots of tears!

Our top tips for the London Marathon

Know your runner’s plans

If you’re there to support a specific runner, make sure you know where they’re starting and their estimated start time so you don’t miss them along the route.

Arrive early for a good view

Once you’ve chosen where you want to watch, make sure you arrive early as it can be extremely busy, especially at popular locations like Tower Bridge and Embankment. If you plan ahead, you may even be able to watch in multiple destinations.

Plan transport in advance

Getting around London can be extremely hard during the marathon. Tubes and trains are packed, whilst buses and taxis will struggle with road closures. Make sure you check in advance whether your preferred stations are open and try and walk where possible.

Bring drinks and snacks

Being a spectator can be tiring too! Stay hydrated by bringing plenty of water, and pack some snacks, as nearby cafes and restaurants are usually very busy on marathon day.
