Ventotene is an island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, off the coast of Campania, Italy. It is the remains of an ancient volcano, and is part of the Pontine Islands. The island is elongated, with a length of 3 km and a maximum width of about 800 metres. Santo Stefano is located 2 km to the east, and Ponza is 40 km to the west. The island has 633 permanent residents, and had a prison that has been closed.
