Varberg Overview

Varberg is a city in Halland County, in southwest Sweden, with an almost 200 year tradition as a seaside resort and a spa. The Swedish king Oscar II and authors Verner von Heidenstam and Gustav Fröding were celebrities who early discovered Varberg´s advantages as a summer resort and a spa. Varberg was chartered in 1100. It is an old trading city. From the 14th to the 16th century it was often conquered by hostile armies. In the treaty of Roskilde 1658, it passed from Denmark to Sweden. Varberg can look so different because it has been rebuilt in around 5 different locations mainly due to the destruction of Danish vikings. Varberg is located in a terrain of hills and plains. It is largely without trees and green areas, in its place are bald rocks and sand. The sandy beaches are very popular in the summer. Another main factor in Varberg is its natural surroundings. Just a 20 minute drive inland reveals a totally different landscape.

There are many interesting places to visit for those who are curious and have an inquiring mind, in Varberg and its surroundings. The most famous sight is, of course, Varberg´s fortress. An impressive building, when viewed from the sea, this medieval castle is majestic and seems invincible on the cliff. In the sunset, the roof and walls glows, as if on fire, in red and yellow. Ästad Folkskola is an old school from the beginning of the 20th century. Everything is as it was, from the old school organ to the pens and so is the teachers residence. The split through the rock is 10 m deep and between one and two metres wide and was probably caused by water from the inland ice. The Marinmuseum is a museum exhibiting Europe's largest collection of outboard motors, approx 250 different kinds, the oldest is from 1897 and the youngets from the 1970's.
