Porec Overview

Porec is a city and port on the western coast of the Istrian peninsula, in Istria county, Croatia.
During the 2nd century BC a Roman Castrum was built on a tiny peninsula where the city core is situated today. During the reign of Emperor Octavian in the 1st century, it officially became a city and was part of the Roman colony Colonia Iulia Parentium. In the 3rd century the place already had an organized Christian community with an early-Christian complex of sacral buildings.
A basilica was built here in the 5th century where the relics of Porec bishop and martyr Saint Maurus, now the patron saint of the city, were kept. The city plan still shows the ancient Roman Castrum structure. The main streets are Decumanus and Cardo Maximus, still preserved in their original ancient forms.
Today Prec is them main destination for toursits to the region.

Porec Attractions

Euphrasius' Basilica is the most valuable cultural monument in Porec. It was built on the remains of an earlier tri-naval basilica, in the first half of the 6th century, during the period of Bishop Euphrasius, whose name it bears. The Native Museum of Porec building is situated in a Baroque palace, Sincic, from the 18th century. On the ground floor there is a collection of stone monuments with Roman scriptures, and an archaeological collection of prehistoric ceramic works. The Norther Tower was built in the 15 century. Today the edge is still partly preserved. Located at the beginning of the central street, Decumanus, at the entrance of the heart of the old city, the Pentagonal Tower was erected in the mid 15th century in Gothic style, with a relief of a Venetian lion on the facade. The Great Temple is the remains of an ancient temple from the beginning of the 1st century.
