Palau Overview

Palau is a large tourist town on the northern-most tip of the Sardinian coast and stands in front of the archipelago of La Maddalena.
The tourist marina lies to the south of the berthing area reserved for the ferries to Palau and during the summer months it is full of boats of all shapes and sizes.
The town has grown considerably in recent years, with complexes of villas and apartment blocks springing up along the coast.
Today, the town is an autonomous municipality and has earned itself extraordinary success in the panorama of international tourism. Palau, with its coastline artistically moulded by nature, is one of the places most adapt for carrying out sailing and windsurfing activities. Towards the end of the last century, the area began to be populated by fishermen and farmers.

Transportation in Palau

By Car There ia an expressway to Nuoro and Cagliari (SS131) and national roads to Sassari (SS199-E840), Tempio Pausania (SS127), and Olbia (SS125). All connected to Palau.

By Bus All towns and cities on the island can be reached using the highly efficient island buses.

By Ferry Palau ferry port operates a service to Napoli with Medmar. There is 1 crossing a week, with a 14 hour sailing duration.

Palau Attractions

The most characteristic nucleus is Porto Raphael, built around a small beach which has been turned into a picturesque harbour, overlooked by elegant neo-Mediterranean architecture. The renowned Roccia dell'Orso lies just a few kilometres from the town. It is an enormous granite boulder, shaped like a large plantigrade. In it's innerland surroundings visitors can find prestoric monuments like Nuraghe and the Tombs of the Giants. Forests, small lakes, waterfalls all add to the outstanding natural beauty of the area of Palau.
