DFDS to close Liverpool Birkenhead Dublin ferry service
Date: 14 Jan 2011 00:01 Source: Lloyds ListDFDS has announced that it is closing the loss-making Irish Sea ferry route from Liverpool to Dublin.
This follows their decision to sell the loss-making route Liverpool Belfast to Stena Line in December last year, and represents their complete exit of the Irish Sea - a market that they had only entered with last year’s acquisition of Norfolkline.
DFDS chief executive Niels Smedegaard said: "It is with deep regret, that we close these routes. Despite an impressive effort from employees and a very comprehensive analysis of the market and evaluation of turnaround scenarios we have not succeeded in developing viable solutions for the route.
"The market conditions in the area are quite simply too difficult and unfortunately we do not envisage any improvement in the near future."
