Eurostar launches investigation after another train breaks down
Date: 22 Feb 2010 11:15Source: Travel Weekly
Eurostar is to launch an investigation after more than 740 passengers were stranded in the dark for more than an hour when their train broke down in one of its tunnels last night.
The service ground to a halt just five minutes from Ashford at about 10.45pm on Sunday, Februay 21, leaving passengers stuck in the dark with temperatures rapidly rising.
Passengers then had to make their way along the tracks before boarding a replacement train which arrived an hour later and which took them to St Pancras station.
The original departure from Paris had already been delayed due to a baggage alert. Passengers eventually arrived in London at about 2.30am, compared with a scheduled arrival time of 9.59pm.
A spokesman for Eurostar, which came under fire in December when more than 2,400 customers suffered long delays and stoppages caused by the wintry conditions, apologised for last night’s incident and said an inquiry had been launched.
He said the rail operator was not expecting any delays to today’s London-Paris services as a result of last night’s problem and that customers should check in as normal.
Meanwhile, a reduced London-Brussels service is also resuming today following last week’s crash between two Belgian trains which killed 18 people.
Services may also be disrupted on Friday, February 26, and Saturday, February 27, when up to 70 drivers and 20 on-board staff from the UK plan to walk out in a row over pay and conditions. Eurostar has claimed its service will not be disrupted as overseas staff will be brought in to cover any gaps.

Eurotunnel shuttle services are currently resuming after an extensive snow clearing operation at the Folkestone terminal. Earlier heavy snowfalls of up to 50cm in Kent made the safe movement of vehicles around the terminal difficult and shuttle loading and unloading operations problematic. Eurotunnel staff are continuing to clear access roads and ramps to ensure the safe flow of vehicles to the shuttles. Eurotunnel are expecting one departure per hour in each direction and customers with reservations are advised that they will do our best to accommodate them when they arrive at the Eurotunnel Terminal this afternoon.
Due to the adverse weather, some customers are experiencing delays getting to the Eurotunnel Terminal. Road conditions continue to be affected by the snow and Eurotunnel advise customers to ensure they allow enough time for their journey.

Statement from Irish Ferries - Wednesday, 3rd February 2010
Following the fire which took place on the Irish Ferries Ireland/France cruise ferry "Oscar Wilde" last evening, the vessel has been taken back to Falmouth this morning where it is now docked.
A thorough investigation will now be carried out by Irish Ferries and others in order to determine what may have caused the fire, to assess the full extent of the damage and to evaluate the full nature and extent of the repairs that may be necessary.
At the time of statement, the company has no estimate as to how long this investigation will take or of the length of time the vessel will be out of service while repairs are carried out.
For the time being, the company has taken the precaution of cancelling all sailings until next Wednesday, 10th February at the earliest. In the meantime, the company is in direct contact with all intending passengers and freight customers for whom alternative arrangements are being made.
The company regrets the inconvenience which this incident will cause to customers while the vessel is out of service. In addition, the company would like to extend its thanks to the Captain and crew of the vessel for their speedy and effective response to the fire and to the UK coast guard, marine rescue and other outside agencies that provided assistance

The new Swansea to Cork ferry has arrived in Wales for refitting work before it carries its first passengers on the reinstated service on 1 March.
The Julia, which can carry more than 1,800 passengers and 400 cars, was previously sailing in the Baltic Sea.
But after being bought by a co-operative for £6.9m in 2009, it has been brought to Swansea Docks for work.
The Swansea to Cork service, which started in 1987, has not run since late 2006 when the previous vessel was sold.
It is hoped the reinstated trade and tourism link between Wales and Ireland will be worth £50m to the economies of both sides of the Irish Sea.
The 154m ferry, which will operate under the Fastnet Line brand, has 10 decks and can also accommodate 40 trucks and trailers.
It has an array of restaurants and bars, shops, a children's play area, a cinema and a casino and also has over 300 passenger cabins, which operators say make her particularly suited to the night crossing.
