Brittany Ferries doubles service to Spain
Date: 24 Dec 2009 10:37 Source: Brittany FerriesFollowing the success of the Portsmouth Santander ferry route, launched in March this year, Brittany Ferries is adding yet another luxury cruise-ferry to its fleet to provide travellers with an additional 2 round trips a week between these ports. This move will mean that from March 2010 the UK and Spain will be linked by a total of 4 Brittany Ferries passenger services every week: 3 from Portsmouth and 1 from Plymouth.
The new vessel – as yet unnamed – has been purchased from the Attica Group and is currently the Superfast V. She will complement the existing Spanish services operated by the company’s flagship, Pont Aven, with which it has many features in common, notably its high cruising speed enabling the crossing from Portsmouth to be made in just 24 hours. With 244 cabins – all with ensuite facilities - she can accommodate 1,500 passengers and their cars. Whilst on their cruise to Spain passengers can enjoy the swimming pool, choice of restaurants, shopping, bars, live entertainment and movie lounge, plus superb French service.
David Longden, Managing Director, comments: "Despite the recession, demand for the new Spanish route has exceeded our expectations and forward bookings for 2010 are strong. We believe this is because Portsmouth is very easy to get to by road, especially from the Home Counties. At the same time more and more people are discovering the unspoilt delights of northern Spain. Plus, of course travelling by car means taking as much luggage as you can fit in and even on! So, the sailing really is part of the pleasure. We believe that the increased choice of departures on luxury cruise ferries is a great value alternative way to travel to Spain.”
The new ship will also operate to Cherbourg from Portsmouth. The route will also be complemented by an increase in frequency of the High Speed service Normandie Express that will carry out two rotations a day during the Summer.
There will be a reduction in passenger sailings from Poole to Cherbourg with the withdrawal from service of mv Barfleur from February 1 – although the last cruise ferry service will finish in Poole on 7 March 2010.
Whilst it is sad to see the Barfleur go, these changes reflect Brittany Ferries aim of matching services with demand.
