'Interest' in axed ferry service Date: 2 Jun 2008 Source: BBC News
'Encouraging' signs of interest have been shown in taking over the ferry link between Scotland and Belgium, Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson has said.
He was speaking after confirmation that Superfast Ferries is to abandon the route between Rosyth and Zeebrugge.
Superfast's parent company, Attica, has blamed rising fuel costs, the strength of the pound and falling passenger numbers for its decision.
But Mr Stevenson told BBC Scotland the route remained viable.
Operator Superfast ferries announced on Wednesday that it would sail for the last time on 13 September.
Mr Stevenson said he had held discussions with its parent firm, the Attica Group.
"We are supporting Forth Ports' efforts to engage a range of other ferry companies and consultancies to see what options there may be," he told BBC Radio Scotland's Good Morning Scotland programme.
"Attica themselves are saying this could be a profitable route and I'm listening very carefully to what Forth Ports have said that this could easily attract 60,000 freight units a year in a market place of 200,000-250,000.
"This ought to be a very attractive option for some of the other ferry operators that there are."
'Successful route'
Attica's interests are largely based in the Mediterranean and the Aegean, he said, adding this the Rosyth route was an "outlying service" for the firm.
"It is bitterly disappointing after many years of successful operation of the route," the minister added.
"But I think there's signs, early encouraging signs, of interest elsewhere and we're going to do everything we can to support Forth Ports in ensuring we get a replacement operator."
The firm, which operates a total of four ferries, also runs services between Greece and Italy.
Labour politicians in Fife said they were "devastated" by the news and called on First Minister Alex Salmond to take urgent action.
Condor Ferries staying at WeymouthDate: 2 Jun 2008 Source: thisisdorset.net
Condor Ferries has 'no intention' of leaving Weymouth, its managing director insisted today.
David Harbord was responding after council chiefs warned the town could be hit if Condor, one of the harbour's key players, pulls out of town.
Conscious of the falling numbers of visitors to the harbour and a need to boost income, officers from Weymouth and Portland Borough Council have drawn up a blueprint for the future that considers options such as a floating casino or restaurant.
A report to the harbour management committee goes on to highlight the potential loss of Condor Ferries - which has been put up for sale by its parent company - and claims it would have a serious impact on the economy with the loss of many jobs.
But Mr Harbord said: "We have no intention of withdrawing from Weymouth or ceasing our operations.
"We intend to be here for many years to come.
"There have been rumours about the potential sale of Condor Ferries and I'm not prepared to comment on them.
"But the fact is that Condor Ferries is here and will be here for many years. I want to reassure people of that."
He added: "We operate from Weymouth, Poole and Portsmouth. Weymouth is one of our fast-ferry routes and it's a great location for us. It's ideal because Weymouth is the nearest (mainland British) port to the Channel Islands."
Mayor of Weymouth and Portland and harbour management committee member Tim Munro said Mr Harbord's statement was 'encouraging'.
But he added: "It's what directors say about football managers. They have every confidence in them, then the next week they're out."
Coun Munro said the council had a good relationship with Condor Ferries but he warned the council had to be 'pragmatic' and plan for 'risks'.
He said: "If you look back in history there wasn't exactly a queue of ferry operators waiting to come in and run out of Weymouth.
"The report is to do with managing risk and what is likely to happen.
"There's nothing sinister about the report, it's a management tool considering all possibilities.
"If Condor does go it would leave a hole which may not be as big as people imagine. The site would be available and that would have huge implications for the Pavilion area."
Rosyth Zeebrugge link to stop in SeptemberDate: 1 Jun 2008 Source: Lloyds List
Superfast Ferries have announced that the Rosyth to Zeebrugge ferry service will cease operation from 14th September, 2008. The last crossing will take place from Rosyth on 13th September 2008 arriving in Zeebrugge the following morning. As per the company’s fleet deployment plans for next year, the vessel Blue Star 1 will be redeployed as of the coming winter in the markets where Attica Group’s vessels are presently operating.
Attica Group has had discussions with the Scottish Government and Forth Ports for the future of the line and has assured them that we shall provide all information and assistance required to operators who may wish to take up the route.
