Larvik Overview

Larvik is a town and municipality in the county of Vestfold in southwest Norway. The town was founded by Count Ulrik Fredrik Gydenløve in 1671.
The oldest known commercial site from the Viking Age can be found in the region at Kaupang. Excavations and studies have found that Kaupang functioned as a handcraft and commercial center, with around 1,000 inhabitants. The vikings lived there from around 700-900 CE.. New excavations stared in May 2000. Larvik has its own particular stone variety, called Larvikitt. It is 270 million years old and has been used in the stone quarry industry for more than 100 years. Today this stone is Larvik's largest export article. The present stone quarry industry is Larvik's largest industry. Larvik houses the Treschow estate which is currently owned by Mille-Marie Treschow, the most affluent woman in Norway. The estate was created in the 1820s when the last count was declared bankrupt.

By Car From Kristiansand, take the E18 towards Arendal all the way via Stathelle following the signs to Larvik. From Oslo, take the E18 towards Drammen via Holmestrand following the signs towards Larvik.

By Train The Norwegian State railway has trains set up to go along the southern coast of Norway all the way to Oslo. There are no trains northward. The railway station is located in the center of Larvik.

By Ferry There are up to 6 ferry crossings a week to Frederikshavn with a sailing duration 6 1/2 hours

Larvik Attractions

Larvik district is rich in cultural history. The Museums can tell you about the rich cultural history of Larvik. The Herregården Museum "The High Residence of the Count" - was built in 1677 by the recently appointed Count of Larvik, Ulrik Fredrik Gyldenløve. The Residence is one of the earliest and most important example of Baroque architecture in Norway, adapted to traditional Norwegian log-building. The interiors are famous for its rare decorations in regency and baroque style. The Larvik Maritime Museum is to be found by idyllic Tollerodden in Larvik's oldest brick building. Models, pictures of ships and artifacts tell Larvik's maritime story, of sail, whaling, and modern shipping. Fredriksvern Verft is one of Larviks best kepted military constructions from the 1700 centry. The place has played an important part in the Norwegian sea history. Red Riding Hood, The Wolf, Hansel and Gretel, Nordic characters and many other fairy story characters from childhood are waiting for you at the Fairy Tale House. Tollerodden is a park and bathing area in Larvik. Boat builder Colin Archer was born here and also had his home and boat yard. Many pilot, rescue vessels and small ships were built in Larvik. The most famous is the polar ship "Fram".
