Algeciras Guide

What is there to do in Algeciras?

The unprepossessing city of Algeciras has become proud of its simplicity. Little activity occurs in the grey streets and forgettable architecture, just the constant passing of passengers travelling onwards to more appealing destinations. Although the port city has a reputation for its underwhelming infrastructure, there are a few areas that are pleasing to the eye; Plaza Alta is a surprisingly quiet part of the town, comprised of colourful buildings and archaic historical landmarks. Numerous cafes and bars are dotted around the complex, providing the ideal setting for a cosy spot to enjoy a refreshing beverage as you watch the world unfold. Aside from the Plaza Alta Square, Algeciras’ other claim to fame is being the birthplace of famous flamenco guitarist, Paco de Lucia. The entire city can appear like a shrine to their most lauded export; several landmarks are scattered around the city in reference to the musician, and there is even a tour that showcases everything associated with him.

How do you get around Algeciras?

The city is very small so most choose to travel by foot if they are to leave the port area.
